i'm a pre med student at georgia southern univ., and i want to buy a sportbike. i'm 6 ft. 280+/-, and im a pretty strong guy (benched 425 last year as a senior hs football player). i was totally set on buying an r6, but from everything i've read in online forums, i am seriously considering an sv650s now. i have been riding this moped (down once, front brake locked over sand at 20-25mph) i bought a month ago and i'm pretty confident i can handle a bike (on normal roads anyway). i looked into taking MSF, but the closest class is about an hour away. i am from columbus, ga and i think there are classes there since it is a big city. i have about 4700 in the bank (mostly from savings bonds), and i plan plan on selling my moped for 1200-1400 (paid 1575). spring semester is coming up and i have 5500 more on the way. plus my mom gave me half of my future car money (2500), but i'm gonna use the other 2500 to buy my brother a bike. he's about as big and strong as i am, except he's 6'3 300 and signed to play center for auburn's football team. if anyone can give some suggestions on what i need to consider before buying, i'll be grateful.

first off :welcome: :twfrox: . K, now that we have that out of the way, it sounds like you have a very good plan about riding. I am reletively new myself, and have taken my MSF course. Best money I have spent on my bike so far. My suggestion is that try to buy a bike and take the course close together. Most people take the course, and buy a bike months later and most of what you learned knowledge and practice wise, is gone. A lot of people here on the forum have an SV, and they all seem to like them. Personally I like the full fairing look, and would suggest if you like the same, get the SV650s with the side plastics. Most people suggest to get nothing more than a 600cc class bike, and I fully agree with them. Unless you are like 6' 7" and 400 pounds, a 600cc bike is plenty. These bikes have power, especially the newer ones with fuel injection. It also looks like your bugdet is flexible enough to get what you want, which is always good. Its cool you have something with 2 wheels and a motor to practice on for the time being. Any practice helps. I started riding bicycles for a while just to get used to riding on 2 wheels again. Looking forward to seeing what you end up buying.

:welcome: thebiscuitbiscut I hope you stick around. The members here and cool and very informative. Which is why :twfrox:

i don't want to have full fairings on it because i'll just have to end up fixing them if/when i go down. definetly going with the s version with half fairngs.

Yes... take the MSF!!! And yes, a 600 should work for you. And I was real happy that my first bike didn't have a lot of plastic on it, because even if you don't go down hard, you will probably tip over at least once because it seems to be something that almost everyone does at some point. :luck:

I love my sv, it's a great bike. They do make frame sliders to protect the lower fairings, I have them on my bike. I also recommend getting a fender eliminator of some sort, because the snow shovel that comes with it is ginormous. I don't have any sort of problems with my bike yet, but it is only a month old. I plan on getting the gel seat and the rear seat cover in the next month. There are tons of mods for this bike, and most of them can be done relatively cheaply. Like the inline turn signal mod to just remove the two side front lamp lights and make the orange and adjust the wiring to get rid of the bulky side markers. As a first bike you will be more than pleased with it.

I have a blue merc jacket by icon, but the rest of my gear is from other companies. It's a decent jacket, I will probably have to get something else when summer comes around cause it gets a little hot when it is above 75 degree out and it isn't the best winter jacket either because the sleeves don't have elastic on the cuffs and wind gets in really well.

MSF is a great course I would highly recomend taking it.

:welcome: biscuit :twfrox:

Your defiantly looking in the right direction for a first bike. Sign up for a spring MSF class even if its for the waiting list. It will be the best time and money you spend for a bike.
Icon is also a good choice for gear. You don't have to go overboard with it or any thing. Just get a good helmet, jacket and gloves to start. Normal over the ankle work boots are fine but, when you can afford it. I recommend getting some actual ridding boots (Velcro zipper style), not the Joe Rocket, Icon or any other brand lace up hiking boots. Then some good ridding jeans or over pants like, Dragging Jeans or Joe Rocket 5.0 pants.

Now for the SV.
It is one of the best all-around bikes on the market today. Its a stable and very quick bike. It has the potential to grow with your ability with upgrades. The normal go fast goodies and suspension upgrades. You can even get big bore kits that put out well over 100 hp to the ground.

Biscuit... I tell ya, you are one of the rare future riders that I hear speak some common sense. YOu really sound like you got your head on straight.

Both the R6 and the SV650 will do ya right. They are both great bikes, and will allow you find your MC riding footing.

Have you sat on either of them yet? That may help ya in the choice.

The best thing about the SV is that it is virtually bullet proof, tons of parts on ebay to buy when you drop it, and it has plenty of growing room.

For gear, I would also check www.newenough.com

But stick around, cause :twfrox:

Since when does physical size and strength have anything to do with
handling a sportbike ????

answer : Never has and never will

Look at motogp riders......... some tiny 140lb guys who can
handle a 250HP motogp bike............. nothing to do with size
skill and experience is far more important than size & strength.
Othern then oicking it up when you drop it

Ya but he hasn't said what I hear from most newbies...

"I need a bigger bike cause I'm a big guy"

There are a few guys on here with SV650s'...including Shan (admin).

On that R6... how many miles and what type of condition is it is... $4k might be a bit high!

re:

from his post, "well i am going to let my baby go it is a 99 R6 with 02 tail and under tail also has a black powder coated frame and all maint. has been done early 19000 miles and has had no mechancal problems" he was going to throw in a set of sharkskinz too for 4200, but i didn't need them so he said he'd meet me halfway in macon for 4000. i'll ask if he'll add some frame sliders to it if i meet him this weekend.
