At the risk of drawing ire, I hope this is taken in the spirit in which it was written:

To All the Riders I Haven't Met:

I just spent part of the day at the Maryland Motorcycle Show last week, and bumped into a couple of my riding buddies. We grabbed lunch and went into the seating area to yak and catch up. We talked a lot about the mild winter, and the fact that the warm days had already brought out the "squirrels" on two wheels, and compared the acts of insanity on public roads we'de already seen. As group, we're all a little older (30-50's) and most have a lot of riding years and/or miles under our belts. The rest of my afternoon was spent alone in my truck going around the beltway in the snow, doing service calls, so I had a lot of time to do some thinking. The following is the product of those conversations, and the ruminations that followed.

I REALLY hope you will stick with motorcycling; I think that, as a group, bikers are some of the nicer folks I've had the opportunity to meet. I spent a lot of years riding alone, and in the last few years I've hooked up with a number of like-minded riders, and found the enjoyment I've gotten from riding to be multiplied. I look forward to another riding season, and the opportunity to meet many of you. That being said, some of you scare the beejesus out of me, and I probably won't ride with you more than once, if at all.

I won't ride with you IF you:

A......Think a good day of riding includes a couple of stops at the local watering holes, and your attitiude is "It's only BEER, man."

B......Don't wear basic gear. I know, I know.....free choice and all that crap. But I too have a free choice, and I choose NOT to ride with people that can't or won't exercise good judgement about something so basic. If you REALLY do believe that helmets are bad for you, well, I hope you survive long enough to change your mind. If you don't have enough respect for yourself to take basic precautions, it's doubtful you'll care enough about me and my friends to avoid endangering us. I never understood how someone could spend $10-12,000 on a new 1000 cc sportbike and not have enough money for a set of basic gear (Helmet, Jacket, gloves and boots).

C.....Don't maintain your bike........few things are more annoying than planning a ride, only to have to wait while you run around at the last minute looking for parts, or spend the better part of a beautiful afternoon sitting on the side of the road waiting for your tow, cause your bike broke down, AGAIN.

D.....Ride over your head....many a nice ride has been marred by the tragedy of crashers, who lie about their experience level, and then make the rest of us literally pick up the pieces. Nobody wants to see you down, and nobody wants to do CPR, but we will if we have to. Nobody wants to have to call your parents or girl friend or wife and kids and tell 'em you're on a helicopter to Shock-Trauma 'cause you didn't know how to counter steer, or that braking in the middle of a turn was a bad thing. We didn't sign up for that. Be honest about your skill level, we'll be happy to give you some pointers. Some of us are even licensed, skilled racers and instructors; all you have to do is ask and we'll show you all we know.

E.....Dis my ride....I don't care if you have the lastest, greatest 160 hp monster Japan can crank out; I ride what I ride 'cause it suits me, or mebbe 'cause it's what I can afford, what with a mortgage, two kids in college, and building for my retirement. I often wear out a bike before I get another one. If I pull away from you at every corner on my sub-100hp, high milage, 8 year old sport-touring bike WITH saddlebags, maybe horsepower isn't the most important part of the equation.

F.....Endanger me or my friends with your show-off manuevers. You KNOW what I'm talkin' about: passing on the inside of corners (some a-hole wrecked a good buddies NEW SV1000, when he decided to stuff his clapped out fur-bike underneath in a turn and then couldn't hold the line), passing the group up the middle in a 12 o'clock wheelie IN TRAFFIC, and in general, acting like the road is a track and your ego fulfillment is the most important thing in the world.

G.....Ask my advice about the wisdom of trading in your 2 month old 250cc Ninja and buying the latest and greatest 1400cc 200mph monster bike, and then dismissing me with a wave of the hand and a "ya, but........". If you already have your mind made up...don't ask! But don't call me up when you wreck it and ask to borrow my truck to take it to the dealer, either.

ALL the aformentioned happened to me or friends of mine over just this last riding season; the amount of stupid stuff I could tell you I've survived over the last 32 years of riding could fill a book. It's dangerous enough out there without our own adding to the pucker factor.

If you have more "Don't Do's" feel free to add 'em on....................

You make some great point and have given some great advice.
That's the biggest reason I only have a select few I ride with and reluctant to allow more in the group.

Just to add my POV
Show off if you (anyone we meet while riding) must. Its your hide and license. Just don't endanger me or my friends while doing it. If We see you riding over your head and want slow down after we advise it. We will slow to allow a safer ride for you. Then we will sneak off to do our own thing with out you. Don't take offence to it. Its for your safety.

now how can i respond to that without p*ssing off most of the people here...
well, you sound like my mom...even though i'm over 40...

when one is young and have to prove themselves, they will do stunts on public roads. I did at that age. so I really can't be hypocritical about them.
the adrelinaline level is very addictive. no need to justify stoopidity, it's just plain fun... only stunters now why they do it.

and no one believes helmets are evil. some just chooses not to wear them. I ride with people who don't were helmets or not wear seatbelts. I don't judge a person for the gear they wear or not wear.

but i will not ride with choppers or goldwingers...

my opinion: track training should be a requirement for motorcycle licensing.

I don't think he was trying to sound like your mom. I think this is more about that if you want to be like that, then he doesn't want you around him, not to make you stop doing it. If your mom raised you by seeing you do something stupid or showboaty and told you to go away and do that somewhere else, that is not a good way to raise a child.

Sounds like pretty much all the same things that will NOT get you invited on another WOS ride!

The ride is so much better, and the conversation after as well, when it is not all about that one ******* that kept doing this or that or the new guy that goes over his head and crashes.

I don't think you will draw too much ire. It seems most of the squids own bikes because chicks like em, and they wouldn't be doing things like reading up on motorcycling or talking about it on forums :)

I have a serious problem with non-wearing gear people. If they go down and they aren't wearing gear... all they do is ruin my day.

READ my post.......I don't care what you do, or where you do it...unless it endangers me and the folks I ride with...THEN you won't get invited back...

As far as the helmet thing....I didn't say EVIL...I said "bad for you"...and if you haven't run across people who think helmets restrict their hearing, or their vision, or cause neck injuries, then you've never heard of ABATE. Read their website, talk to some of the ABATE "True Believers".....they think helmets are a plot by the government against bikers..............

As far as judging people....if it looks like a duck...........

i wish i had a duck (ducati) or one that looks as good.

i never heard of ABATE, or even met anyone from ABATE. Are they a handfull of fanatics or do they outnumber the stunters?

don't worry, i don't plan on riding with you. i'd prefer an open minded group. the groups i've ridden with usually breaks into two. the first group rides hard while the other group takes it easy (usually with female passengers). the ones that ride hard are spaced safely as not to endanger the group if they fall. the two groups meet up at the next watering hole. if one has too much to drink, then we take his keys and call a friend with a trailer.

ABATE... a bunch of morons who think that they should have the right to choose to wear a helmet or not.

Here's Michigan's site...

Like the govt is going to tell you that you HAVE to wear a seat belt while ridingin in a metal cage surrounded by air bags, and seat belts...but you can choose to wear a helmet when surrounded by nothing... MORONS!!

Another topic for discussion......I don't like being told what to do anymore than anybody else; but; one of the main premises of the the ABATE folks (at least in this neck of the woods) is that helmets do not work; that they actually increase both the frequency and severity of accidents and injuries. How do I know this? I went on an ABATE ride/fundraiser/rally last year. That was one of the main topics of the several speakers.

I have no problem with those that wish to change the mandatory helmet laws...just make sure ya got yer facts straight.

that's a kewl group. but $20 to join. i'm gonna jew out on that one and stick with AMA. They also promote MSF. That's not a bad thing.

you know how i feel about common sense laws. if the smart ones wear helmets, then let the not so smart ones die and not add to the gene pool. insurance rates should drop if the not so smart ones DOA. No cost in maintaining their health, no? if the not so smart ones wear a helmet and survive, then insurance cost goes up, yes?

but seriously, ABATE doesn't sound like a bunch of fanatics. it would look odd seeing choppers with full face helmets...

If I see anyone drive a cage or get on a bike that I have seen drinking, I immediately call in their tag. I guess having your grandmother run over by a bunch of ****ing idiots that had been drinking makes you a little mad at ****tards that "think" they can handle alcohol. I would do it to my friends and family as well.

Old...you're right.... they are MORONS as I said... I've heard that :wbs: before from them... that the helmet when it hits the ground you can snap your nexk or some dumb ****!! F'in IDIOTS!

And yes, support AMA if you're going to support anybody that you THINK is going to look out for riders best interests.

Full face on a chopper... well I got one for mine for the cold days and maybe for longer trips... we'll see....
