Animal deterrant when riding?

I know there is both sides of the fence on this. But you know those little clip/stick on high pitched deer deterrants that you can stick on the front of the bumper of your car, and its supposed to makes a loug, high-pitched whistle or squeal, that will deter away deer from running out in the road?

I saw a harley this morning with these on, of course they were chromed out and all along with the rest of his bike  ...but anywho, I actually asked him about them, and his response was, I've been riding for 25 years now, alot of back roads as well as highways, and never hit a deer yet and have always had them.

he makes a good point, but do you think they actually work that well, or he just got lucky.

Personally an aware / skilled rider is just as much as important in avoiding accidents with animals as putting the little whistles on. Obviously there are exceptions, like when an animal runs out in front you like at the last second and you cant react to avoid it..but hence comes the point he made about never hitting one yet. ?

I have never heard of them so I have no clue to if they are good or not. I still like Twisty's idea...open her up and the deer head on. :D :dthumb:
When I worked at Pep Boys....loooong time ago, we used to sell alot of them. I always wondered so I asked a customer one day and they said they work pretty good. People were actually giving them as Christmas gifts. Never seen them on a bike but it works, why not? They could save a persons life. Ill take you there some day DJ and learn ya on them.

No sorry. I have lived in mostly big cities growing up and not a need for them.
well I heard they worked well for the occasional big city squirrel as well!
I don't knowe if they work, but I've seen them. Seems like a good topic for Mythbusters.

Hey...those things can get pretty big. May need 2. :D
I wouldn't suggest just aiming for them...we have already seen what happens with this idea on that vid a while back.

N4S, here's somin for ya to do at work today. I know that I've seen many pics and seen in a collision shop I worked in. Many cars coming in with these on their bumpers and they're in the shop for hittin a deer...too funny!! I know these things suck! I just wish I would have thought of them and made that couple million on them!!
also too..if all animals can hear high pitched sounds, then why doesnt it bother the occasional dog riding in the car too..dont they hear the same things deer do ?

i'll see what i can dig up gas man..
Just came across this today..

Deer whistles

The authority cited studies in other states showing that such technology-oriented solutions might reduce the number of accidents by at least half. But in New York, the state hasn't concluded whether the program works.

"It is difficult to monitor how successful the reflectors have been so far because we do not have enough data," Thruway Authority spokeswoman Casey Cannistraci said this week. "The result of how effective the reflectors are is inconclusive."

Some motorcycle riders, including members of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, use deer detection alerts on their bikes.

"They emit a high-pitched whine. I don't know if it scares the deer or not, but it works," said Elaine Price, a member of the motorcycle group, which has members across western New York.

Police say there is no substitute for careful driving.

"It is extremely important that motorists remain aware of their surroundings and be on the lookout for deer along the highways," said Maj. George Beach II of State Police Troop T, which patrols the Thruway.

Maintenance crews removed more than 2,600 deer carcasses from the Thruway last year.

Price said that both bikers and drivers have to be alert for deer all the time, not just this time of year.

"It's a problem, year in and year out, whether you're on a motorcycle or in a car," she said. "Deer never slow down."

Yea man i hate deer, in Long Island they are WAAY over populated, i see deer on the road constantly and i see deer waiting to cross, and deer crossing my path almost as much. Ive almost hit a lot of em. Dumb bastards, If this thing actually does work a little I would definitly want it on my bike.
they will hear this little whistle, but they can't hear my 1000cc twin screamin at 8K rpm coming down the road? maybe they work, i really don't know.

hey orange, havent seen u in awhile..WB  yeah i know right, its almost like they stand there just waiting for us, and decide play chicken with us!!
Deer like to feed at dusk, so watch out then. I was on my favorite twisty today and saw a dead elk on the side of the road. It was huge. I'd hate to run into that. Their coats don't reflect light very well, but their eyes are like reflectors. If you see a reflector blink, slow down because it is a deer. I've seen lots of deer killed by 18-wheelers, and those trucks whistle like crazy. Those whistle things on cars can't project ahead so I don't think they'd work.
I don't think anybody hates here hates deer as much as I do..and I'll just leave it at that!!!
Do they really work? I don't know, but I will tell you this. I never had those things on my car, and never had a deer run out in front of me. I put a set on my car one year, and within two weeks, a deer ran out in front of me. I took the things off, and didn't have any more incidents. So I don't know if they work or not, but I know that I won't be buying another set of them.
I don't care about a deterrant so much as I would like to find an attractent for those "slim" years when I don't get any in the field I can run one down with the car or truck..
