I know there is both sides of the fence on this. But you know those little clip/stick on high pitched deer deterrants that you can stick on the front of the bumper of your car, and its supposed to makes a loug, high-pitched whistle or squeal, that will deter away deer from running out in the road?

I saw a harley this morning with these on, of course they were chromed out and all along with the rest of his bike  ...but anywho, I actually asked him about them, and his response was, I've been riding for 25 years now, alot of back roads as well as highways, and never hit a deer yet and have always had them.

he makes a good point, but do you think they actually work that well, or he just got lucky.

Personally an aware / skilled rider is just as much as important in avoiding accidents with animals as putting the little whistles on. Obviously there are exceptions, like when an animal runs out in front you like at the last second and you cant react to avoid it..but hence comes the point he made about never hitting one yet. ?

Just came across this today..

Deer whistles

The authority cited studies in other states showing that such technology-oriented solutions might reduce the number of accidents by at least half. But in New York, the state hasn't concluded whether the program works.

"It is difficult to monitor how successful the reflectors have been so far because we do not have enough data," Thruway Authority spokeswoman Casey Cannistraci said this week. "The result of how effective the reflectors are is inconclusive."

Some motorcycle riders, including members of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association, use deer detection alerts on their bikes.

"They emit a high-pitched whine. I don't know if it scares the deer or not, but it works," said Elaine Price, a member of the motorcycle group, which has members across western New York.

Police say there is no substitute for careful driving.

"It is extremely important that motorists remain aware of their surroundings and be on the lookout for deer along the highways," said Maj. George Beach II of State Police Troop T, which patrols the Thruway.

Maintenance crews removed more than 2,600 deer carcasses from the Thruway last year.

Price said that both bikers and drivers have to be alert for deer all the time, not just this time of year.

"It's a problem, year in and year out, whether you're on a motorcycle or in a car," she said. "Deer never slow down."
