I am the FNG so hang in there with me. I plan on starting to ride this spring, but want to do some research on the gear prior to riding. What do you guys recomend? I know that some are die hard for certain brands, but what will do the best at keeping the brains in my head if I crash?

First off :welcome:

There are tons of threads on here about this same topic... this is one of those high repeatable topics!

Do you seriously want to know the best? The best is expensive... is that a problem?

Good question, but it's like asking what's better: Ford or Chevy trucks? Coke or Pepsi?

Generally speaking, the more expensive the better quality, but not always.
:withstupi and by the way Dodge and Coke

You don't need to break the bank when buying gear.
First and most importantly, buy what fits your body.
Buy what you like and thanks looks good.
Buy what you can afford buy shopping local stores and internet.
Name brands are only important to some but, they do show history and you can research quality of brand.

Alpinestars and Shoei, even though I don't have either.

Well I am getting some A* riding shoes for christmas. Other than that I have some cortech gloves, icon jacket, and KBC helmet.

I agree, I was told that they are basically the Abercrombie & Fitch of the motorcycle scene.....
But that don't mean they are good!

I think Alpine Star is one of the best
Joe rocket is up there as well, I have seen a JR jacket crash tested by myself and one by Twisty many many times over!!! Great job by both JR jackets!

I like ICON............

wasnt too impressed with Icon...I returned almost all of the Icon gear I had bought..with the exception of the primer tank bag & a pair of recon pants.

I prefer Alpinestars myself. But like many others have said..get what fits you best.
