My ZZR600 is due for its first service. What is normally included in the first service? Do the valves need adjusted? I can do things like oil changes but I'd rather leave the other stuff to a bike shop.

The first question is, how much do you really know about bikes.

First service is mostly oil change. They also check allot of other stuff when they do it. Mostly visual checks of fluids, breaks, loss or missing bolt, chain and listen for ticks, knocks etc.. It is also documented for any later warranty issues.

Just change the oil yourself and skip the service from the dealer.
The first service is a joke. I'm sure most dealerships say they check this and that but you just know they haven't done ****.

Read your manual for the maintenance schedule.

The first service is mainly a $ 135.00 oil change and look over. It is documented, as said above, for warranty information.

My dealer told me that my warranty would be fine if I did all the work myself, as long as I documented everything. So, I followed the owner's manual and called it good.

I ended up saving myself about $120 doing it, felt better about the work that was done and started learning something about bikes.

The dealer hasn't touched my bike since it left the showroom floor. Granted, it hasn't been that long since it has left the showroom floor. But, my intention is to do all of the work myself.

The dealer said they would do the 1st service for $40 +fluids. I wasn't sure if that was a good deal or not. I think I'll just do it myself. :twfrox:

Ya I know that on my 9R I skipped those... I don't think I did any of those services at the dealer. I don't think they are going to check anything that you couldn't do.

Now on something like the chopper, there is a big list of things that they check... however, they give me the first dealer service for free so...no biggie... but that's a very different bike and different service.

For the record.
The only time the dealers see my bikes are for the major services. I also keep all receipts for oil, filter and other parts just incase I have a warranty issue.

Okay, another question. Should I use Kawachem or do you guys suggest another oil? What brand oil filter should I use?

I use Castrol Syntec. Don't switch to synthetic until you're fully broken in, though. I waited until 2000 miles.

with mine, it had 14k on it. I switched to synthetic regardless if taht was in the bike or not. I used a mobil 1 oil. My buddy uses some fancy oil that he swears by, but I cant remember the name of it. I will let you know if I find out

I use conventional oil the first time. Then a synthetic blend. Then full synthetic.

I have used both the Kaw oil and filters and they're fine. I then would switch to a syth oil of your choice and a K&N Gold Performence oil filter. Or even better buy the Scott's Oil filter.

Check your owners manual for oil requirements. I'm pretty sure Mobil will meat and or exceed them.

I just checked and Mobil 1 is GS-4.
It would be fine for your bike.

This has been another debate on TWF!

You DO NOT want to use car oil in your MC! It is not meant to be in there. First off your MC sees alot more abuse and usually runs alot hotter than your car. Second and most important the car oil isn't tested or meant to run with your wet clutch!
