PUSHING INTO THE MID-RANGE: The new BMW F 800 S twin-cylinder

Munich - With its completely new mid-range sports bikes, BMW Motorrad is ringing in the next round of its model offensive. In the first half of 2006, the F 800 will be the fourth model series to come off the Berlin assembly lines and it is sure to stir up the middle class. The F 800 S is an 800-cc twin which offers lots of character, an excellent suspension and typical BMW properties.

The athletic F 800 S sports bike has a dry weight of under 419 lbs. (approx. 441 lbs. ready-to-ride) and is the first model of the new and separate model series. The precise suspension is designed for high directional and cornering stability as well as optimum handling. The classic BMW qualities such as safety, compliance with the highest environmental standards, ergonomic seating position and comfort also for the passenger define the new standard in the mid-range bike. A closed-loop three-way catalytic converter, state-of-the-art digital engine electronics and optional ABS are also a matter of course for this motorcycle.

With regard to the drive-line, BMW Motorrad is continuing with the innovation introduced on the F 650 CS and makes use of the low-maintenance and quiet-running belt-drive. It is lighter than shaft drive and represents the optimum combination of weight, space requirements, efficiency and service life in this performance class.

The engine is also a completely new design. It was developed in cooperation with Bombardier-Rotax GmbH. It is manufactured in the Austrian Rotax plant and is delivered to the Berlin production line ready-for-assembly. The first two-cylinder inline engine in the history of BMW Motorrad features a four-valve design. High 12:1 compression and a combustion chamber designed similarly to the one used in the new K-engine ensure effective and low-emission combustion, as well as efficient fuel consumption which will be considerably lower than that of the competition. Mass compensation for the crankshaft balances unwanted vibrations without foregoing the vigorous characteristics associated with two-cylinder engines. The compact engine unit with integrated 6-speed gearbox has been designed for balanced power delivery and uncomplicated riding pleasure. A peak output exceeding 80 bhp with respective torque will also satisfy a sports-rider's needs.

The new BMW F 800 S will be presented to the international press and then the public for the first time at the EICMA Motor Show in Milan on 15 November 2005.
The price has not yet been set.

i heard a while ago that BMW was coming with a parrallel twin. Its less confusing looking than other BMW's. So we have a rotax built motor and belt drive. interesting...

Its a BMW... go to a dealer and test ride a few... there is good reason why they are more money!

It looks ok. But whats up with the rear. Why are alot of bikes now making the so much wider like this?? The Gixxer, ZX10R, and this. I am sure more are like this as wel but just to name a few. When looking at the bikes in person, this turns me off from them. I still favor the 00-03 body styles on bikes. But thats just me.

Well I can't name a bunch specific to that bike. But you must remember that they are putting this into the beginner rider market, not the big man competition like the K1200S. However, you just can't respect the bikes till a few other things happen.

First, you have to open your mind beyond getting the cookie cutter, everybody has it, mentality!

Second, go down to the BMW dealer, talk to the salesmen and test drive 3 or 4 of the bikes. Not till then will you understand a few things about a BMW bike. Those being...

1. Its a Freakin BMW... do you honestly think they design crap? COME ON!
2. They come stock with a 3 year warrenty. As all the Japs SHOULD DO!!
3. You have options to order on all of the bikes. OPTIONS! Can't get that on a Jap ricer! You can order anything from ABS, cruise, heated hand grips, ect...
4. Its about having something different and enjoying the ride. It doesn't always have to be about who gets to 100mph faster. But if you like that... try the K1200S! I did! Did you?
5. How about the fact that they are shaft drive without any of the typical shaft drive problems. Good engineering
6. The anti-dive linked braking. Again a great feat in engineering.
7. Fun factor... just like the Buells they have a fun factor of say...quirky engines. Not the fastest but pretty fun to ride.

See those are just a few off the top of my head. I use to be just many of you. If it wasn't ignorant fast, a Jap bike, and full fairings I didn't like it. But sense then I've have tried to make it out to some of these dealerships like BMW and Buell to see what they got. And what they got are some nice machines with a huge following! With that I can knock it if I want cause I tried it.. not many can say the same?

Of over 80 bikes in the last 30+ years I have never had an issue needing warranty repairs

I will choose aftermarket add on's when I choose . Who needs ABS anyway

I would not know , I spend my money much different than you . Never owned a Buell or BMW like you have

If it was ALL about power, then every rider out there would be on an 05 GSXR 1000 or something equally monstrous. But there are 100's of models of bikes that sell in all sizes and categories, i'm sure this bike can find its niche. Would it be in my garage? I doubt it, but ya never know.

I can just picture the very narrow overall crank width , canted cylinder Suzuki Statosphere Inline 6 in that 800S chassis . :drool:

Mountain... no problem... but as I said, I know very little about this particular bike. But what I do know is that it is more of entry level bike for newbies. That's it.

And I don't own a BMW or Buell...I just will stick up for the underdogs sometimes... glad I could help entertain ya..

Maybe BMW bought Yamaha's tooling for the short-lived TDM 850. In the late 90's, Yamaha came out with a 10-valve parallel twin. Unfortunately, Honda and Suzuki also came out with their liter V-twins.
