More specifically, a rear axel nut: When torqueing to spec sometimes the nut is covering the pin hole. I usually go tighter or looser depending on which way is closer. But i'd like to know, what is correct when you have to make an adjustment like that? torque it just a little more, or loosen it a little?

I do like Jeeps... which ever looks closer... usually I'll go for loser over tighter being that I don't believe it to be as bad on the bearings being looser than tighter.

Now if we were talking women... always go for tighter! :whistle: :D :lol:

I always go tighter as it will only add a pound or two more torque. But the bearings will probably loosen anyway, so why go looser? Of course, with a socket over the nut, I always go too far past the holes on the second round anyway.

Go looser. That's what the cotter pin is for. Metal with expand when heated up.

Yes, I agree back up one hole. Your torque setting is the rating of the bolt stretch point going more ruins the integrity of the bolt. Maybe not by much but the practice should be back it up a little then to stretch the bolt at all.:2cents:
