Having read Twisty's thread on "So you think your ready newbie...read this" reading what happend to that riders foot in the thread...made me wonder if my casual boots are adequate enough. Its been said that some of the featuers to look for in choosing MC boots are:

Low Heeled
Zippered instead of laced
Covers the ankle
Non bulky

That said I would say my boots (see pic) meet the all of the above spec. I see riders all the time that wear racing boots for casual rides. IMO I think it looks funny when worn with jeans..I chose my boots for the casual look.

But I wonder if I should be wearing racing boots for the streets? what would be the benefits of wearing racing boots for daily riding?

My take is this: If you are questioning whether or not your gear is adequete...it probly isn't.

The benefit of wearing "racing" boots on the street is this, IMO, say a chain breaks loose on you and decides your lower leg is a good place to come to rest. Those racing boots more than likely will have some stiff material in them...thereby giving your leg more protection that the above pictured boots. Or say you take a nice ride across the pavement. They will protect your more than your average 'work' boot.

:iagree:

But we've all probably seen people riding with sneakers or maybe even flip flops... As long as you wear something sturdy that covers your ankle and wont come off easily in a crash. You are doing better than the average squid... just my :2cents:

There are boots out there that will protect your feet, AND not look like you stole them from a power ranger... I have some of these Icon Boots, they are comfortable to walk in too.

I like either the Icon Super Duty boots, or the Joe Rocket Orbit boots. The Icons feel better on the feet after you get used to the tight fit (I wore a pair out), but the Orbits offer better ankle protection.

I also have a pair of Alpinestars SMX+ boots, but they are just too cumbersome for daily street wear.

Not this again!!!

Okay, so he broke his ankle. Who's to say that a race boot would have saved him from this injury? My Sidi "race boots" are no more stiff in the ankle than other non motorcycle boots I have ridden with. If you bend your ankle enough, it will break no matter what you are wearing. Granted, they may offer a bit more ankle protection during a slid, but if the ankle is caught and bent, I assure you it will break just the same.

His problem is the gear he's wearing, it's riding like an idiot he needs to fix.

I just bought the Alpinestar stunt shoe... actually they're more of a boot than a shoe... they cover my ankle.. and are stiffer than any hiking boots I've had... and have a cover for the laces... but they're as comfortable to walk arround in as my normal shoes... granted they're not going to protect as well as racing boots... but I my bike will be used for more comuting than straight weekend rides by far... so I need something that I can walk arround in. so it was a compromise... I will be buying some nice racing boots though at the end of the summer (when I get back) for those weekend joyrides... but for right now... the Alpinestar Stunt shoes will do... :2cents:

I got the A* stroke shoes. They are quite nice and I think they would hold up well in a slide. They are also very comfortable and acceptable for my job which is a huge plus for me. Right now I don't push my limits at all, I don't even approach my limits. I don't think I would be super comfortable with the safety of these at race or idiot speeds.

My take is motorcycle specific boots are designed for riding a motorcyle just like hiking boots are made to hike in. My A* boots are not the most comfortable to walk in but feel great on the bike. They have armor on the heels and around the ankle to help protect your foot as its flopping against the pavement. They are tilted forward just a bit so when you're sitting on the bike you don't feel tension on your ankle and are more comfortable. They're waterproof(for the most part) to keep your feet warm and dry. There is a shifter pad on top to keep the scuffs down. MC specific boots are worth it IMO if only for comfort while riding.

The LEAST I will ride in is my Army Surplus tanker boots. Over the ankle leather and tough, but still, no torsional protection for the ankle. And those would be for riding up to the burger joint to stand around and shoot the shiz with the other bikers.. Any twisties involved, or even freeway shots or something, Its the Alpinestars.

But anything with SOME ankle protection at least is much better than shoes.

on a serious note, I do recommend a actual motorcycle riding boot. They are made for the support a rider needs.
I picked up a pair of Nitro V boots for $60 on clearence last year at a local honda shop.

I don't care if my boots look funny to anybody. No matter what the rest of my attire is. I will never wear a boot that doesn't cover most of my lower leg. I fill safer wearing them.
I have a few pairs of both casual and full race in different brands. All my race boots have ankle braces. They do restrict movement when walking but they weren't designed for walking to start with.

I scored some Nitros last year and love'em. Hard to beat for the price. I still like my Sidi's and A*'s the best.:2cents:

I'd love to have some sidi's or A*'s but I can't afford it right now. Besides the Nitro's are like brand new except the outer edges of the toe section where they scrapped the pavement in the twisties.
