Wellborn boy died Saturday from injuries sustained after he drove an all-terrain vehicle into the path of a semi-tractor truck in Suwannee County on New Year's Eve.

Cody James Creech, 9, was thrown from the Honda ATV he was driving when he crossed County Road 137 and was struck by Andrew Footman Jr., 39, of Tallahassee, who was traveling southbound, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Cody approached CR 137, about nine miles south of Live Oak, stopped and checked traffic before crossing the road, according to the FHP. Footman saw the ATV enter the road ahead and slammed on his brakes and swerved to the left but was unable to avoid a collision.

The boy was not wearing a helmet or protective gear, FHP spokesman Lt. Mike Burroughs said.

Cody had been airlifted to Shands at the University of Florida, where he died.

What a drag!! I don't think all the protective gear in the world could protect you from semi tractor truck. I wonder if he was riding unsupervised??

About 5 years ago, a coworker of mine was killed on an ATV. He flew over teh handlebars and broke his neck.

A chilling reminder to those on 2,3, or four wheels.

Here are some parents who should be beaten repeatedly about the head and shoulders for being so stupid, Except They are paying the ultimate price for allowing this. This is why many communities want to ban pocket bikes. Soon, we will see this happen somewhere else on a pocket bike instead of an atv because some parent thinks these motors are toys and they end up on the streets in traffic, being operated by a child.

So true. Now he has to live the rest of his life living with this fact. That could almost feel worse then being the other person. :nonod:

What parent would let a nine-year-old ride an ATV across a highway? They let 16-year-olds ride here, but the 16-year-old drivers I met I wouldn't let near my bicycle.
