Wellborn boy died Saturday from injuries sustained after he drove an all-terrain vehicle into the path of a semi-tractor truck in Suwannee County on New Year's Eve.
Cody James Creech, 9, was thrown from the Honda ATV he was driving when he crossed County Road 137 and was struck by Andrew Footman Jr., 39, of Tallahassee, who was traveling southbound, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.
Cody approached CR 137, about nine miles south of Live Oak, stopped and checked traffic before crossing the road, according to the FHP. Footman saw the ATV enter the road ahead and slammed on his brakes and swerved to the left but was unable to avoid a collision.
The boy was not wearing a helmet or protective gear, FHP spokesman Lt. Mike Burroughs said.
Cody had been airlifted to Shands at the University of Florida, where he died.
