Hey guys i'm thinking about taking Buisness Managment at SDSU and i was jsut curious if anybody here is taking that or allready has taken it?. I really want to open up a shop after i finish school, as to why i am wanting to take Buisness Managment.. Anyway i was just curious how the whole process is.. Plus i'de be in SoCal to hit up some of the meets lol..

I started to take Business Management at University of Kentucky (UK) I took a few courses, I really learned alot about it just from the few courses I did take. I changed my major so many times, from Computer aided drafting, to business management and ended up going for something almost totally different career feild wise as an Audio Visual installation and programming technican. Its definatly worth it to atleast learn the fundamentals of business magagement side of things.

SDSU is pretty nice. :dthumb: I have a lady friend who goes there now. We were from NorCal and she's been going down there for the past 3 years also for business management I believe, and loves it. You cant go wrong with that major. Its very versitile. You can get a job in any type of work field, but with a minor in the field you would like to work in helps out too. San Diego in general is just a nice area. Expensive but nice.

I'm currently finishin' up my Bachelors in Business Administration with a focus in Information Technology and my friend has his Bachelors and Masters in Business Administration. So, needless to say, he's gonna be doing all the business courses and I'm gonna do the IT courses!

It's called "cooperative learning"! And hey, I DID the papers for one of my friends to get his Master's degree. He never got below a B+ on ANY of them and he has his Business Administration Maters so is that a bad thing? I can do Master's level courses but not Bachelor level courses, I'm still trying to figure that one out! :scratch:

I would suggest that instead of getting a general business admin. degree, you should go for a certificate that will guarantee you a job when you get out and cannot be easily outsourced overseas, such as CPA or CMA, if you want to work in the business world

I basically went that route I have multiple A/V certifications, I am going for my final CTS which is the highest Audio Visual certification possible. I am almost guarenteed a job with any audio visual company, but I don't think it gets much better than working for the worlds 5th largest engineering with a seperate A/V engineering firm. We design the coolest A/V setups. I wonder if I had a degree if I would make a little more money, but I don't know if it would be much more, I have alot of college credit along with my certfications, so I know that was taken into consideration when Gannett hired me, I also had the intent to go finish the degree.

He said no one will care what its in, just that you have one...Well, that was true in the 70's...But today, a general degree will get you a general job with general pay...You can still finish your degree...I went back to college at 42 and completed an Accounting Degree to go with my General Studies degree from the 70's...In today's world, You have to prepare...

I've got a Business degree, though I can't say it's been tremendously helpful up to this point. I would have been better served with a degree in Discussion Forum Management. :lol:

:iagree: My dad tells me and my two brothers the same thing about the degree, but my older bro and I didn't do too well in college, so we both went to a technical college and got certifications in something. I still have the intent to go back and finish the degree, but by then my credits will probably be worthless since they change the requirements all the time.

Getting too specialized in a degree can often hurt you. I would suggest getting a BS or BA in General Business or whatever. Give you alot to fall back on if owning your own business does not happen right away. More or less just get a college degree, then some real world work experience. Thats when you will learn the most. I have a BS/BA in Engineering and Business. For the most part it just helped me land my first job. But to be honest the real learning comes in the work place. Thought I knew it all when I graduated MSU, yet no looking back I realize it was far different and I knew nothing (aside from how to drink and cope with hangovers) LOL. Diversify yourself in your degree so you dont limit any possibilities. :luck:

Edit: Ace basicly what you just said my brother told me also.. My brother is going to the University of Oklahoma and he majored in International Buisness, Marketing and spanish. He's interning right now in cancun mexico.. Yea he told me that i need to intern at least while im in college so that i can learn how it actually is...

EastCoast, yeah internships always look good on the resume, and the experience is well worth it. Even better if the internship is paid! :dthumb: My company recently hired 2 of its last interns which have graduated college and now full time employees. So it hels get your foot in the door as well.

No problem. :dthumb: These guys make valid points though. Get as broad an education as you can. The more you can do, the better the job market will be for you. Too specialized could mean in 4 years that job is obsolete. Im really glad I switched my major/career(video production/editing) to a more broad job field (Information Technologies) :yesnod:. Like Ace said, Working in the field, your going to learn more and faster. I fortunately am going to work and school for the same thing. In my opinion, It is the BEST way to go. I would learn something in the classroom, and the next day in the field we encountered that same problem we discussed in class the day before and learned twice as much twice as fast. Also if you work in a generous company, they might actually pay for you to futher educate yourself becasue it benefits the company. If you plan to work while going to college, try getting your foot in the door of a company that relates to the business you want to start. Just my :2cents:...and after I just wrote all of that I noticed that Ace pretty much already said the same thing... Good to hear it twice I suppose :bonk: :lol:
