I am going to be buying a bike in the next couple of days for around 6500 from a private party. My question is when I go to the DMV to get plates will I have to pay taxes on the bike? I am in IL and if so how much?
thanx

Most likely... just have the seller put down a lower price so that you pay less!! But you didn't hear that from me!!

in AZ, all you need is bill of sale with notarty seal and fill out the title transfer section on back of title, and go to DMV and pay for registration. No tax...thats thier pitch here in the used market, no tax. So I dont think Ive ever dealt with that.

But if thats not the case, I would take Gas' advice and make him lower the price.

I'm in Illinois, too. And you luck out big-time if you're buying it Private-party. Tax is only $25 on a used motorcycle being purchased from an individual. :dthumb:

Total cost will be $103 - plates and title
$25 - tax

Also, if they ask if you have a bill of sale, say "no". Just give them the title that is signed over, and they don't even bother to try and estimate the motorcycle's value. Just a flat $25 fee.
