Loris Capirossi flew back to Europe on Sunday night after being ruled out of the Polini Australian GP at Phillip Island when he crashed heavily at Turn One in the first free practice session.

He sustained chest injuries in the fall, with internal bleeding around his right lung. The Ducati Marlboro Team rider had been recovering in Melbourne’s Cabrini hospital and he had been passed fit to fly home to Europe, with a chest drain attached to drain the bleeding.

“The doctors decided it was best for Loris to fly home on Sunday night,” said Ducati MotoGP project director Livio Suppo. “He's flying with Dr Corbascio, from the Clinica Mobile, and should meet Dr Claudio Costa this afternoon. Hopefully the chest drain will be taken off soon because it's causing him some pain. Otherwise he feels good and doesn't have any other injuries. For sure he will miss Turkey, but it's too early to talk about Valencia.”
