Hi guys,
I bought a used 2001 R1 and I want to change the oil for the first time. Just want to ask how to remove the fairing so I can get to the oil filter and drain plug. thanks guys. don't have a manual yet so please bear with me.

Yeah that's a stupid Yam design! Why in the f**k they designed those bikes that way....

Follow the screws and eventually the fairings will come off!

There is an assortment of Allen screws an push/pull buttons that need to be removed to take off the lower fairings. The oil drain should be easy to get to. You will need a socket type filter wrench to get the filter off also. No room for the handle type.

Maybe you just need to take it to a shop or enlist the help from some one that knows how.

No bashing intended. Sometimes its just easier if some body show you how its done in person or pay somebody to do work for you. Something as simple as striping the threads on a drain plug of filter can be very expensive to repair.

But serioiusly... disassembly is the easiest part. Just start looking for screws and bolts... with a little bit of time it will come off. Make sure you keep your screws in bowl, pan, or like me...a muffin pan or ice cube tray.

Just remember if the fairing acts like its still attached somewhere. It probably is. Don't force anything.

Just by looking its pretty obvious which screw are holding the fairing on and which ones are not................. if cant see that then you should probably get someone else to do it.............

We all have to start some where. That's why I suggested enlisting help from a knowledgeable person to aid in a hands on job.
