just purchased a '05 taillight off ebay. i plan on sending it in to mccoy to have the integrated taillight kit placed on it.
i want to make sure it is in working order before i send it out.

my questions is, can i disconnect my current stock unit's plug and just plug it into the recently acquired unit to see if it works?
i don't need to 'ground' it in any way do i?

That should do it. All the wires it needs to operate should already be in the plug.

Or, you could modify an old PC power supply and hook it up to that. It's pretty easy to do and very useful, if you like to tinker with electronics.

just hook it up to a 12V source and ground it.
