hi there. just got my first ducati, a '95 900ss. it's coming up on 15K, and i am planning on doing a valve adjustment on it, as well as rebuild the front forks. i was wondering if anyone has had any experiance with the older two valve engines, i.e. how often is it nec. to replace the closing shim, versus just confirming correct clearences. i also was wondering if anyone had any tips on rebuilding the forks. it's a cr, not a sp (so the forks are not adjustable). i am a ford master tech (auto), but this would be my first time wrenching on a bike, other than a lof or chain maint. thanks in advance for your help.

I never adjusted desmodromic valves, but I have a great article about it. Motorcycle Consumer News is a terrific, but expensive motocycle magazine. There's no advertising so the tests are more valid than most. Anyway, they have several articles about Ducati. One where they do a valve adjustment and one where they do a 900SS hop-up. They also did a test of a 94 900SS CR, a review of Ducati maintenance books, and a clutch slave rebuild. I can make a copy and snail mail them to you. Send me an e-mail or pm.
