i think my clutch is acting up on my bike. if i romp it in first gear it goes no problemo. but in second it feels almost like the chain is jumpin teeth but its really not. both sprockets look good and also the chain. lemme know what you all think and is it hard to do the cluth myself. never done one on a bike. but im a mechanic so i have and idea of how stuff works what yall think i should do? id appreciate all feedback on this.

Is it an abrupt jerking motion in second gear only? If so, you could be loosing the second gear engagement dogs...not an easy fix. Here's any easy way to tell if it the clutch: Get it up to about 60 in third or fourth gear then snap the throttle wide open. If the rpm's climb but the bike doesn't accelerate, your clutch is on the way out and you should replace at least the friction plates. It's not too hard if you have some mechanical skills and a manual (recommended).

thanks for the input guys. i think it might be more than the clutch cause it is an abrupt jerking and only in second gear. but i cant afford to take it to someone and have them fix so can any tell me how much this might cost in parts and how long should the job take? if any special tools? thanks again

2nd gear should run about $600-800 in parts (depending on damage) and probably another $700-1000 in labor (depending on labor rates). Not sure about special tools on an R6, but you will need a good compliment of standard tools including torque wrenches.

This job requires you to pull the motor and dissamble the engine to the point of splitting the cases so you can remove the transmission. Not a small job but more than one inexperienced mechanics have done it at home.

It's hard to diagnose a mechanical problem over the internet. Like does second gear make the noise when shifted into second or all the time in second gear? The person who wrote the article in Motorcycle Consumer News about putting the shift kit in his Yamaha YZF 600 (I know it's different from an R6) had the following to say about his bike before he put the kit in:

"Your left foot will encounter more crunching balkiness upshifting to second and downshifting to first on this bike than on any other current 600 (the article was published in 1/2001). False neutrals are also readily available in several nearby locations. The problem is most upsetting during high rpm clutchless upshifts during spirited sport rides or track days, but it's noticeable even when calmly tooling around town."

If that sounds like your problem, I would try installing the shift kit and hope that it cures your second gear noise.

That is a good point but the sloppy shifting is probably what has ruined 2nd gear. If you have ridden a bike with worn engagement dogs it does feel "like the chain is jumpin teeth but its really not". Someone who has experienced it will be able to tell you if that is the problem with a quick ride.

If you do end up having to rebuild the trans, I highly recommend adding a shift kit to the list of parts to help prevent this from happening again.

new transmission

Well, i got a new transmission so i guess im gonna get a book and dive into it. For everybody that took the time to read this and or reply i appreciate the help.
