SANTA FE (AP) - A New York group is moving forward with plans to put up a billboard along Interstate 25 that suggests New Mexico’s driver’s license program is too lenient.
The billboard will depict a photograph of World Trade Center bomber Mohammad Atta’s Florida license and the caption, “Some States Made it Easy — Don’t License Terrorists, New Mexico.”
Amanda Bowman, the director of the Coalition for a Secure Driver’s License, says the billboard will be displayed between Albuquerque and Santa Fe before the end of the month.
New Mexico is one of eleven states that don’t require license applicants to prove their legal presence in the U.S.
Immigrant-rights groups argue there is no connection between the issuance of driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants and terrorism.
