The new motorcycle helmet law says that the helmet must meet DOT safety requirements.
Police are cracking down on offenders, but not everyone has gotten the word.
If you are riding a motorcycle and not wearing a DOT approved helmet and eye protection, police are going to give you a ticket and troopers may even tow your bike.
Cpl Mark Francis/Lafayette PD: We will make a traffic stop and we'll issue that individual a ticket for riding without the proper helmet...
The Louisiana State Police take the matter even more serious.
They'll only give you a certain amount of time to have someone bring you a legal helmet. When that time expires, they tow the bike..
As you might imagine, that doesn't sit well with some riders.
Trooper Will Williams/Louisiana State Police: You're always gonna have some people who don't want to abide by the rules and again...when we find those people riding along the road, no matter who they are, or where they are, we're gonna do what the job requires...
Eyewitness News found this stricter push on the new helmet law is catching some riders off guard.
Tab Hebert rode up to Downtown Alive with a non-DOT helmet.
Tab Hebert/Dislikes the Law: It's news to me. I hate to see them do all that, but I guess it's for the safety of everybody...
Motorcycle Club President Darrel Leslie says he's all for safety.
Darrel Leslie/President, Motorcycle Club: The first time it should be a warning, but then again if you look at it, we've all been warned by the passing of this law...
And as for the members of his club?
Darrel Leslie/President, Motorcycle Club: I recommend that they abide by the law...
