In a crackdown to enforce a tougher road law, more than 20,000 drivers were caught illegally using cellphones in November, the National Police Agency (NPA) reported Thursday.
The revised Road Traffic Law took effect Nov. 1, with fines of up to 7,000 yen for talking with a cellphone in hand or reading or sending phone mails while driving.
Some drivers tried to duck the fines by dumping the handsets into their pockets-with someone still saying ``Hello! Hello!'' on the other end, officials said.
In some cases, the police crackdown led to arrests of those trying to flee because the drivers had disregarded traffic lights or were driving without licenses.
Under the revised law, the fine is 6,000 yen for passenger-car drivers and motorcycle riders; 7,000 yen for bus or truck drivers; and 5,000 yen for small-motorbike riders. :wtf: are you doing yappin on ur cell while riding past a cop in the first place.
and now, for the rest of the story
