Ok...so I started discussing this again on another forum...

What weight rating does it take to use these on a trailer to haul your bike?

Dyno, a mechanical engineer and WOS member, said it takes alot more rating than just the 400-500 lbs weight of your bike. Sounds right...here's the logic..

Your bike may only weight 450#'s but that is just what it is pushing down at the wheels. You have to consider how much torque you are going to be pulling on the D-ring when you compress your bike's suspension...add that to the various torques that is will go thru as your navigate your trailer down the road...

You can get 5000# rated rings as in the pic pretty easily..but what is your take on the subject. I know that the 5k# is plenty but what would be the minimal rating you would want?

I have always used eye bolts. Nothing less than 3/8ths
and use a 2x2x1/8th plate on the bottom. If you can get your eyebolt through a steal part of the frame your even in better shape. I would have to think the d-ring would not be my first choise unless they were heavy duty and bolted clear through with four 5x16ths or larger bolts with a steal plate on the bottom to prevent the bolts from pulling through. Also just as a note. you realy dont need to suck up your bike super tight. Ratchet straps are nice but one would have a notion to over do it. You really just need to suck it up some then put some out rigger style tie downs on it to keep the leaning from happening. :2cents:

Big consideration when installing is getting steel backing plates if you are installing on a wooden floor trailer. The D-ring may have xxx# rating, but if it is held down by for bolts through the wood then the wood becomes the least strong member of the equation. Four bolts through the wood and through a steel backing plate distribute the load through that whole 6" x 6" floor section not just the washer diameters under the wooden floor. :2cents:

I went with the 5,000# ones as the cost for the 3500# was not much lower maybe $5 ea. The D-ring weight rating exceeds the rating of the floor that is holding them unless it is steel flooring or 2x10 type decking.

You also have to generally cut a hole in the wooden floor for the recessed portion of the D-ring, about a 3 1/2" hole for the 5000# types. Measure twice and cut once.

Here is the pics.
The blacked out one is the underside, after install I sprayed with undercoating to prevent rusting of bolts and plate.

I put them right, left and middle. Front and back for a total of 6 tie downs.

I also bought some linoleum remanents from Lowes for $12 and put in after cutting the holes and bolted everything for a clean fit.

Kind of a :gary: design, but it makes cleanup easy. Oil and fluid don't soak up into it.

not gay at all.. it is a good idea - like you said cleanup is easy, etc. of course though if it is raining be careful as your traction might be minimal.. that and an oil spill on linoleum might be pretty slippery as opposed to bare wood, etc. As long as you clean it up right away - I am more referring to those spills, etc. that you can't see or if your bike is outside in the rain and you have to load it in the rain...

Absolutely on the slippery when wet part. There is a downside to every good idea. I keep a rug rolled up the lay down when wet to give some traction to get the bike in. That's why I take my kids to the track with so they can push and pick me up when I try something stupid.

I have painted a few wood trailer floors and added some silica sand for extra grip... it works well and keep you from staining the wood from oil and such...

My overall out take on the D rings????????????????????????????
:dthumb:
Not a big fan either.
But as for additonal stability or a second strap, I like em'. But give me an eye bolt any day for the load bearing hold down. :2cents:
