I have been checking out this site for a couple weeks now but haven't acutally made a post yet...
ok so question:
Im almost 18. i have been riding around a cruiser (650 cc) for just over a year and need to step up. i was thinking about a new gsx r600 but my dad thinks its too 'hot'. i know i could handle it because i've riden my friends tricked out r6 several times and it wasnt too much but what does everybody else think?

I think that if you have been riding a cruiser for a year and a half, you have some experience with traffic and handling the weight and torque of a medium sized bike...It is a good start...Now the GSXR you are looking at is almost double the horsepower with 2/3 of the weight.

In Auto terms...you are moving from NASCAR to a GTP 2 or 3 car, one step below F1...(liter bikes)

Start with a used bike...you will have developed enough bad habits piloting that boat anchor that you will drop and rash your first sportbike through inattention or surprise...Listen to your Dad and think carefully, do your homework before you move up...

i think you could handle it, as long as you respect the bike and what it is capable of.

you already have an advantage over most new sportbike riders, which is some experience on a 2 wheeled vehicle. Take the MSF course if you havent already, it looks good for insurance anyway, and you learn a lot even if riding for a while.


But yea go used, man. Much cheaper to own, insure, and repair if needed (usually)

Second, I don't know you and don't know your capabilities...

So... how many miles have you rode?

I will give you this.. at least you have some street expierence..which is more than we can say about most other newbies!

i have put over 5000 miles on the current bike. a lot of that is highway driving going from houston to austin. so i know how do handle both the highways and the crazy streetsz of houston.
how do i know if a used bike i want to buy is some p.o.s. that wasnt taken care of?

You will just know... look at the overall bike condition. Check for tire wear, peg wear if it has rubber on them... check the oil level and color, the brake pads... just like when you're buying a car... check it all out.

If you not confident doing so, take a buddy or family member who is!

Hey SWEET! Another h-townian! We'll have to meet up and ride sometime. As for the bike, I think you'll be ok. the 600 is a step up, but the 600 doesn't have "crazy power." It's not overwhelming, in other words. As stated above, as long as you respect the machine, the road, and other drivers as well as keep a cool head and not get into one of those "let's see what this thing can do!" moods, you'll be fine.
