Hey my buddy owns a Ducati 748 2001, well anyway we are having a problem with it. Maybe you can help. We were riding one day cruisin at about 140 and the bike just shuts of so he pulled over then trying to start it back up we killed the battery. Well we loaded it up and took it to the house we figured it could be the stater that was bad so we checked it out and it was good so then we made sure the battery was good and it was we figured it was electrical so we started testing the sytem and nothing so far. Then we decided to see if the bike would start and Boom it fired right up! So we checked to see if it would go in gear and it did but it wouldnt go above 5000 RPMs any idea what is going on with it. well if you have an idea let me know thanks DUC riders :pat:

Well the first problem is...it's a Duc, furthermore, they're not designed to go over 85 mph... ask Twisty, he'll tell you a recent and funny story from the track.

Second, it sounds like maybe it's a problem with his stator! But I would recomend taking it to a shop before somebody makes it worse...

Well, i had the same problem at the end of last season -- i thought it might be a tune up or the maintenance but i have put the bike away from the season and taking it to the shop this week -- i hope it doesn t dent my valet -- does anyone know how much it would cost for a 6500 mile maintinance done on my 2000 748 ?

If they charge more the $350 your getting ripped.
Its all time and that's about it.
Unless you need parts! :2cents:

Wsup Jeeps -- So i see you have 2 ducatis which ones do you own and can you tell me a little about how to maintain my ducati -- i am a amature rider right now - only 23.
I have a 2004 998 & 1996 M900 Monster

Do it all you self! :here: If you have the knowledge! :here:
Duc's and Harleys are the easiest motors to work on.
I am still new to Ducati but have worked on my own bikes and cars for years.
I'm still learning the in's and out's for the Duc's
I let my stealer do the first service on my 998 for warranty and I doughty they will see it any where again except for in the parking lot or going down the road.
Its not a money thing.
I just enjoy doing it my self
If I screw something up (it happens) I know who to blame.
Most everything you need to know about your bike can be found in a service book but, you will need shims and special tools to do some work (expensive)
You need knowledge and experience helps! :2cents:

Get a basic quote before you take the bike to the shop!

Quotes are ALWAYS a good thing.... they really can't stray far from them unless they uncover something totally un-expected...

"Couple of things...Ducs will run all day and all night, IF they are maintained. Your poor running above 5000 rpm is typical of a bike that hasn't had valve maint. done. Bring the valves back into spec, and it'll run just fine. The charger problem can be due to a couple of things; many of the late model Ducs came with NDenso rectifiers; this is one case where German or Italian are superior to Jap. Also, make certain that when your original warranty service was done, that the stator bolt was removed, cleaned, and retorqued with the proper loc-tite; because of the vast amount of torque and light flywheels, Ducs will spin there stators if not retorqued at the specified times. All belts should be replaced at every 6K miles, unless you race, in which case every other track day should do it. All of this can be done by the average home mechanic, provided you have the proper tools, a modicum of patience, and the shop manual.

My 98 has 19000 miles on it with no more maint. issues (none) than the 15 jap bikes and one BMW I've owned over the years; except in talking with other Duc owners, if you ignore or "Stretch" the recommended service intervals, you WILL lose performance and can trash the motor. Mine is equipped with the factory hi-perf chip, and factory (Loud) carbon cans and I run mine harder than any jap bike I've had (including my 1100 Zook and 929RR), because of it's confidence inspiring handling and ride.

The only caveat with Ducs is "thow shalt not skip scheduled service"!

Hi, i just got my tune up done and valves adjusted but my bike seems to heat up it s about 90 degrees outside and when i am in 3rd gear or even 2nd gear my bikes temerature goes up to about 200 - 210 and when i am riding in 6th it drops to about 180. Is this normal because i have never noticed these types of fluctuations in temeprature before. Jeeps help !

That doesn't sound good man!

Is that air cooled? I don't think it is...

If its not, then you might want to make sure your water pump is working... and maybe your thermosat. Water cooled companents are all the same, basically... cars, bikes, whatever, the prinipals are the same... go thru the parts and make sure everything is functioning correctly!

Today i went out for a quick ride about 20 miles. As soon as i got home my clutch as slipping - The freeplay kept increasing while i engaged the clutch. The temperature on the bike read about 250 degrees. I dont know if these two problems are related but i just got a lot of work done on the bike. I am not going to ride the bike until i know what is going on. And yea 250 is the max temp. value on my 2000 748. Any suggestions?

Over heating;
You definitely have a problem!
Check your coolant level first. Its tough to get to the tank and rad cap. You have to lift or remove the gas tank to get to them. Check the levels in the over flow tank. If its dry add coolant to the tank and to the radiator. Then start the bike and let run long enough for the coolant to start to flow. (look in radiator) Add more if needed.
You may need a new impeller for the water pump. This can be done at home. I put one in a friends 996 this spring. It does require a bit of work.
New impeller could be up to $100 + labor.

Clutch;
First check the fluid level. Add if needed.
Have you noticed allot of black dust/dirt around the clutch cover? (mostly to the bottom/back)
It may need new springs and or clutch. To many choices to give a price.

PM me if you want to. I don't check in here as much as I use to, so I miss allot of threads.
