Ok, so I was out riding today and about 40 miles from home i stopped to fill up at the gas station and as normal i gave my bike the once over before i got back on to continue my glorious day of riding( 75 degrees and sunny all day.) Well i went to look at my back tire and saw a steel line going up the center of the tire about two feet!! These are still the original tires from the factory Dunlop 218. I purchased the bike roughly 8 months ago and have only put 2800 miles on it. So this flipped me out. Did i have a relatively trustworthy ride to get back home and to the dealership before it went?? Well i made it back to town and went straight to the dealership. they told me that the dunlop 218s that are on my 05 r6 were pieces of CRAP and that it wasnt surising that this happened even under 3000 miles on them. Also, NO i dont do wheelies( havent even learned how to,) and i dont burn out. I wanted them to last a little more by being relatively good to them.:help: :help:

So my question is what has been the average life span of oem tires that come on the bike, and if anyone has had experience with Dunlop 218 tires how has it been??

my local dealer ship quoted me 179 for a Michelin pilot power + 30 bucks for balencing(sp?) and mounting. Is this Good. I have heard many good things about the pilot powers. what is the general concensus about them?? and is this a good deal?

One thing is for certain I dont think I will ever go back to dunlops again if they are only lasting 2500 to 3000 miles.:cursin: :cursin: :rant: :upset:

That sucks but I wouldn't expect much more from Dunlops.

Do a search on TWF for Pilot Power. THEY ARE THE BEST STREET TIRE OUT!!!

see if your dealer will price match internet prices on tires. I did this all the time in KY, and now that I am in PA the zuki dealer said they will loose their @ss on that if they price matched....so :wtf: I guess not all dealers will price match.
I don't see why they will get a credit back on it later on.

However, buy both a front and rear if your going with the Pilots. Don't mix and match. Get them online and have someone mount them. DO NOT GET THEM AT THE DEALER. They will rape you.

My 208's lasted around 5K or so. I switched to Metz M1's and I am gonna get the Powers next. I'm also putting the 70 series on too. Can't wait.

The best thing to do if your dealer doesn't price match internet pricing order the tires online, then take your wheels in to to have the tires mounted. They really rape ya for labor charges if you take the whole bike in when it's all really simple to take the wheels off.

Well again... to give props to the Powers, they handle GREAT in the rain.

Plus... you can get Powers so cheap now! Its insane!!! No back orders or anything. When I got mine and I was the first out of everybody I knew... I have like a 2 week back order!

Well looking around the internet i found a site click me selling my size for $118!!?? others have been around 140ish.

Hmmm, I want to just take the tire in and have the shop do it but i dont have any stands to do it with. How hard is it to do w/out stands? is it worth about 40 bucks for the shop to do it??

:help: Ok, well another question. I have heard that you should change both tires at the same time. Is this true? my front dunlop still is relatively mint condition. Is mixing brands bad??

I wouldn't mix brands. Your handling will feel a little odd. I find that the front lasts me roughly 2x as long as rear.

:iagree: don't mix... I learned the hard way at the GAP twice! my rear stuck to the road, but my front slid out from under me bad! I lost it at 100+ mph on the skyway around a curve with a 5000 ft drop off the side of the road. I had this happen twice at the same spot a month apart. I was able to save it i don't know how...but i did. I tried that curve again at 100+ mph with matching tires...and I made it with no problem.

no it was my front that slid out both times, and my friend on the R6 never had a problem and he was right in front of me the whole time doing the same speed if not a little bit faster. When we went back and I had matched tires I never had a problem.

I guess it all comes down to the rear tire being a pirilli diablo which gets really hot and sticky, vs. the front tire which was a Metzler Z4 the front tire doesn't have the same rubber compound and couldn't stick to the road very well.

well if you had matching tires, both will either slide or stick... eh?
but anyways, if you mix, have the good tyre up front.

Good ryders adapt to bikes, if the front slides too much, then unload the weight.. if you have a sticky rear, then give it more gas to lighten up the front pass the apex. if it's sliding into the apex, then you need to brake earlier and harder (reduce your attack speed).

Only pro's b*tch about tyres... us privateers can't afford new sets for each session so we adapt to the tyres.

Not a Dunlop fan since their tires tried eject me from the bike.

I love the Pilots. I run their Powers on the street(Proven best rain tire), the Pilot 1200&1800 slicks for the superbikes races and the Pilot Races for superstock races. Oh and I have brand new pair of Pilot rains I havent used.:lol:

First off, $40 to swap tires "on the bike" is a good price.

As far as mixing... I wouldn't but I know many many people that have and haven't had any problems.

I believe most of the profiles are the same on the ZR rated tires!
