I got a '04 gsxr 600 that is starting to worry me. I live in Hawaii so the temps get pretty high here but recently my engine dies after I hit about 215-225 F.

I'm pretty sure the temp isen't even supposed to get that high so I tried changing out the coolant to engine ice. It did help but when the bike hits about the same temp, it starts to bog and eventually die.

I've got less than 4k miles on the bike but I'm starting to think my carbs or something is acting up. Any help would be appreciated.

That's actually a normal temp. It supposed to shut down after the 225 mark. You have another issue like low water or a bad thermostat or collapsing hose. Might even have a clogged radiator or damaged head. I would think its most likely a thermostat.

Does your radiator fan turn on?
Also, use distilled water and redline water wetter. You don't need antifreeze protection in Hawaii.

Ya but engine ice will run cooler!

I don't think this is it..cause your bike is FI... but it could be running real lean. Many don't realize that the gas actually cools the cylinder walls.

First, make sure the fan is coming on at around 210-215 and should run till it gets back down to 208 or so.

When you changed out your coolant...did you run it with the rad cap off? To make sure you got all the air out... you are suppose to do that till it comes to fan temp.

Futhermore, when you run it with the rad off and gas it slowly and lightly...you should see the water level rise in the rad... if not your water pump may not be pumpin!

If all that checks out any of the things Jeeps mentioned... but I would look at the thermostat first!

All my water cooled bikes have been switched to some sort of race coolant. Air looks have been uncommon with my bikes. Not getting enough in on first attempt is common. Had one thermostat go bad and the only water pump was from a crash. My vote is still for low water level or bad stat. If the fan is working properly.

Thanks guys I'll looking into the thermostat thing. What it be easier to replace it myself or to get the shop to fix it? I don't got the extended warrenty so if it's easier and cheaper to do myself, I'll just do it.

Its not a hard job. If you can change plugs and such, you'll be fine.:dthumb: :luck:

Yeah... the thermo is either right on the side of the motor or on the top/back side of the motor...under the tank...
