So how fatal is the windows fatal error message? Wednesday morning when I restarted my computer at home, when it is time to display the desktop, it show the picture and then flashes to a blue Fatal Error screen...when I "push any key" to continue it flashes back to the desktop picture, but no Icons appear and it just sits there. when I "ctrl, atl, delete" it goes to the end task, restart, cancel box...but there is nothing highlighted. the box is blank...someone has run off with all my programs...so how f'ked up is it???

time to upgrade. lol. you could probably keep using it if you just keep restarting it. but if you go to try and fix it, your better off just buying a cheap computer. as far as getting all of your old information, you could try and find a computer shop that can pull it off the hard drive, but depending on what information you want back you might only be able to run it on win 98. what all do you need off of it if any. or what would you like to happen with your computer?

The blue screen of death.. Not to worry, don't get an ulcer over it.. Just reboot - control alt delete it until it reboots.. Go to www.microsoft.com and search for critical updates, etc. Do a scandisk, defrag the fugger, cleandisk - all that good shyt.. Win 98 SE is pretty stable as long as you maintain it once in awhile - clear your history on IE - better yet use Firefox instead of that weak arse IE.. And better yet get Firefox and Windows XP = no more blue screen of death.. If you need help with any of this PM me and I can walk you through it, etc. I am very family with Win 98 SE and how to make it stable..

OR, if you decide that you want to go ahead and update it, grab a second hard drive and install it in your computer, but load XP onto the new drive. Then hook up the old hard drive as a slave and you can get access to all your old files. That's what I did when my computer bit the big one.

Switch to Linux.

Easy switch, and most of the common distributions include office software that is compatible with MS Office.

A LOT more stable, not to mention free! Just remember to burn the CD as an Image or .iso. Otherwise the Linux CD won't boot, thereby preventing you from installing it.

I installed Fedora on my kid's PC without a hitch! I'm no geek at this stuff either.

thanks!! it looks like its time to go shopping...I think this time, I am going to have someone build one for me with exactly what I want. I guess I will empty out the old one and set it up for pictures and games. I have the one here at the office to use...so you haven't gotten rid of me yet.

and to add to that if you ahve ME save everything on cds or whatever. thumb drives work good and then format the whole think, you dont want any trace of Win ME on ur computer. i have fixed computers with ME even Reloaded ME on it from scratch and have had them crash the first time they boot up with brand new ME on them. its that bad i think one of the comapnies gateway or dell will upgrade you putter for free if you bought it durring a certain time. lol
