Hey everyone. New to the site. Looks pretty good with a bunch of great info. I am thinking about getting my first bike. I have always had atv's dirt bikes and snowmobiles but never an on road bike. With gas prices the way they are I have decided that I wont be spending the cash to travel to snow to ride snowmobiles for some time. So, I have a chance to trade the sled for a 2001 CBR929RR with 13000 miles and very clean. What is something like that worth? I have always said that if I were to get a bike it would be a gsxr750. Just from sitting on different bikes they seem to fit me a bit better. (a bit on the short side here)

So, what do you guys think? Too big for a fitst bike? Wrong choice?

my opinion is being your first bike....have you ever rode one before...and if not, then I would think starting out with a 600 would be for the best and work your way up to something bigger.....a 900 is a big bike to begin riding on with no experience...

Even a 600 is too big for a first bike. There is a very good chance that you will kill yourself on that 929. Look for something a bit smaller....Ninja 500 or an SV650 is a decent choice.

And please, save the "I'ma responsible, safe person...I can handle a big bike" riff. I've heard that before...

...that is unless you are a reasonable person who wants honest advice and haven't already made up your mind on the bigger than you can handle bike. If that is you then I apologize.

I dont know about a 500...I mean I'm female...and when I first started riding...I started out on a 600 and did just fine....I think a 500 is too small for MOST men to start out on.....

If you want to jump on a bike and start doing wheelies, then sure, maybe the 500 is not enough. But the 500 is plenty of bike for someone who is looking to learn and get comfortable on a bike. Unless your 220+ and feel the need to jump on your first bike and do 130, in that case go for the 600.
Plenty of females start out on 600's, but they are also a tid bit more careful than men tend to be. Give a guy somethnig that will do 130+ and the little devil on his shoulder is screaming something stupid! Go with whatever YOUR comfortable with, not necessarily what some girl who rides a 600 or guy who went with a GSXR 1000 for their first bike. Its all what you will be most comfortable to learn on and not go crazy stupid on.

thanks for the replies. I was thinking it was a bit on the big side especially for cape cod. No where safe at all to open it up and use the bike to its potential. I am considering it just because its a trade and I dont have to try and sell my sled first and then buy a bike. I am planing on using it mostly for going back and forth to work (truck is a gas hog). No highways really to travel on. I have ridden a few but not far. Around a few neighborhoods really. One was a cbr600 and the other was an R1 never went over 40 mph. Not looking for something to do wheelies on but do like the look and feel of a sportbike. What do these bike have for HP? My sled has about 180 hp and weights a bit over 450 lbs. But, then again there isnt a clutch to pop and its a tad bit more stable. (except for cornering).

p.s. a bit more info. age 29 weight 160 height 5'6"

If someone in your area gets around on a R1 then maybe the 929 isnt too big after all. Hey your the only one who can really tell how you ride or handle yourself. My first street bike was a V65 Magna, That is a VF1100 and the one I had was also the fastest production bike made for that year. But that was me. I never ("Thank God") had any isses. I later bought a CBR600. I never thought I would own a small bike but that was just fun as heck to ride. It ended up as my Old GFriends first bike. Now my wife and I have a Yamaha FZ1. I know I will never use it to "it's full" potential But at least when the two of us are out tooling around I know I have the power to keep us going without burning clutchs or stalling, or even if i Just need to get out of the way the power is strong. Figure out what is best for you. To be honest If you trade your sled for the 929, I'll bet you could trade the 929 for any 750 or 600 if you felt like it. It is not without it's value. :2cents:

Hey guys I'm about to buy my first bike and I'm probably going to end up with a GSXr1000. I've ridden one before but not balls out. I know its a big bike but I'm about 6'3 180 lbs. What do you think? Is there something I should know?

I think it is entirely too much bike for you and you will hurt yourself on it...
There are multiple threads on the forum you should read first. You should start on something smaller...

 Well I think you should know that a GSXR 1000 for your first bike is a big gamble on your life, being 6'3 and 180lbs should not make you think you need a gsxr 1000 for your first bike, why not a gsxr 600, the 600 has enough power for you to play around with, once you get bore upgrade to 750. that's my opinion!! (I'm 5'9 155lb and ride a 03 gsxr 1000, but I have many years of riding experince, and I can tell you the 1000 are nothing to play with!!!)

I am also 6' 3" and 180lbs (give or take a few lbs). I ride an 01 zx6r, and its also my first bike. Believe me, a 600cc as a first is PLENTY of bike...a mistake on a 600cc is slightly more forgiving than one on a 1000cc, ESPECIALLY on the newer bikes. The zx6r is not too small, and suprisingly not that unconfortable either. It fits me just fine. I suggest a 600cc, but to each his own, just be careful :yesnod:

First off :welcome: GF7

I'm only 5'7" but weigh 180# and a liter bike is WAY too much for a first bike. Not sure where you got that idea from. Most likely a dealer or somin... but it's not a good idea. A used 600cc bike should be plenty. I know many tall guys about the same weight or even heavier that ride R6's and 6R's. You just need to find out which one you like more and fits you ok...

There are tons of threads in the BC section about this exact topic...check them out!
