WASHINGTON - Ford Motor Co. on Wednesday recalled 3.8 million pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles for a cruise control switch suspected of causing engine fires. It is the fifth largest auto industry recall in U.S. history.

Ford said the recall of 1994-2002 model-year vehicles includes the company’s hot-selling F-150 pickup truck, Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator and Ford Broncos. The company said it would start sending out recall notices to vehicle owners immediately.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the No. 2 U.S.-based automaker have been investigating complaints of engine fires linked to the switch.

NHTSA has received more than 550 complaints of engine fires from the cruise control switch. There have been allegations of three deaths in cases cited in news reports or lawsuits in Iowa, Georgia and Arkansas.

The affected vehicles include: 1994-2002 model F-150s, 1997-2002 Expeditions, 1998-2002 Navigators and 1994-1996 Broncos equipped with factory-installed speed control.

“We have a solution that fixes the problem and we’re confident that this is going to be the right remedy,” said Ford spokeswoman Kristen Kinley.

Ford said its inquiry found that brake fluid could leak through the cruise control’s deactivation switch into the system’s electrical components, leading to potential corrosion. The corrosion could lead to a buildup of electrical current which could cause overheating and a fire.

Dealers will install a fused wiring harness to act as a circuit breaker in the system. The company said the harness would cut off electrical current to the switch if the current increases.

The concerns over the engine fires led to a recall in January of nearly 800,000 vehicles from the 2000 model year.

The Ford F-series truck has been the best-selling full-size pickup for nearly three decades. In July, when the company offered its employee discount to all buyers, Ford’s F-series set a record for the highest monthly sales of any vehicle since the 1920s with total sales of 126,905 trucks, or an average 4,880 each day for the 26 sales days that month.

wasn't this recalled earlier this year???
I know it was...my dad's expedition was in the recall but he just unplugged the cruise control until he turned the stupid lease in. That was his first and last leased vehicle ever.
He will always just buy new as he always has.
Ford has alot of issues with recalls in the past few years.

Right, because non-American car manufacturers never have recalls (I do agree that they are less frequent and that American cars generally suck, but since I like to argue...):

Nissan Recalls 2.5 Million Cars

October 30, 2003
Nissan is recalling more than 2.5 million vehicles worldwide to fix an engine revolution-sensor problem. The problem makes some engines hard to start and can cause them to suddenly stop running.

About 700,000 of the recalled models are in North America and include the Infinity G35.

Also involved are some Subaru and Mazda models that use parts provided by Nissan.

The automaker said the sensor, which records engine revolutions, could be deformed by heat from the engine. The vehicle models involved were built between April 21, 1998, and May 28 this year.

The recall announcement was made in Tokyo and did not include information on all U.S. models that would be affected.

so now what Ford is 8.2 billion recalls behind Chrysler? And 6 billion behind GM.

I would rather push a Ford with its engine on fire than drive anything else.
AMEN MP!!!

And Homer is right... this still doesn't trump the GM and Dodge recalls of lately.

SV you are also right.. this is a old recall from last year. I know cause I got the recall just after I sold my '98 F150...

Recalls Recalls. Its no big deal. A small few have trouble and the manufacture makes a recall to cover their own a$$. They all do it. Its cheaper than the chance of paying billions in lawsuits.

ok I forgot to add to that i just leased a 2005 trailblazer.. lol.. i checked ford, chevy and chrysler and the bottom line was that chevy had the best deal.. along with GM points i couldn't beat it.. it is a damn nice truck in my opinion.. at least it is not a Dodge, Plymouth or Chrysler of ANY kind.. I traded in a Dodge to get it too so it was a win-win.. not a Ford but good enough..

AMEN on the BMW!! It was a mechanics dream and my nightmare...I think what irks me the most is the amount of money I paid to drive that aggravating POS...

I can't agree on the Dodge...I bought a Dakota new in 1990 as a route truck. I kept it 14 years, 260 K and when I let it go last year, it still had factory shocks and muffler! I replaced battery, belts, hoses, clutch, usual items, but no biggies, not even the starter. I don't think this '04 Quad cab will last half as long...
