Hey all, just wanted to introduce myself... The names Brandon... I'm 25 and in the Air Force... Stationed at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage Alaska...I've been lurking arround several boards for the last couple years... but just recently found this one (don't know how I missed it lol) but anyways...

I just purchased my first bike... a '05 ZZR600... and I'll be the first to say that it's a bit big for a new rider such as I am... though I got an exelent deal on it... ($5,999 out the door + $1000 gear voucher) and it only had 600 miles on it... so I jumped on it... I've got some riding experience, but not much... I rode dirtbikes as a kid... up untill 16... (9 years ago) and about a total of 10 miles on a SV650s...

I've got TONS of questions about this bike... but I'll post those in the proper sections as they come up...

but really quick I was told that it's the exact same bike as the '02 ZX6R just re-introduced... would that be true for ordering parts? I noticed that alot of places don't list the ZZ600 or if they do they usually end at 04.....

anyways... I'll just be chill'n (literally) till mid april maybe may (we got 12" of snow in mid april last year...

it's -10 outside... what's the temp there?

hey ebbs,

Good ole Anchorage, I lived in Eagle River for about 3 years which is just north of Anchorage. Been about 11 years since I moved though and probably another 11 before I even consider going back. Cabin fever got the best of me, LOL! Do miss seeing the sleeping lady and other scenery up there though.

Thanks

My bro actually graduated from Chugiak High. I was young and went to Greuning. Are you a pilot? My dad and I use to go flying out of Merrill and I was in the CAP for awhile there too. That is a crazy place for traffic both in the air and on the ground.

I was forced to re-train after they over booked my job in basic (Aircraft Comunication and Navigation) I'm gonna try to cross train to 3c or 2e2 (network management stuff) but doubt it'll go though...

but yeah I hear ya about it getting tougher to stay in... I will NOT re-enlist in my current career field... but I really don't wanna get out either... lol... ehh still 1.5 years to go for a cross train anyways...

I have two friends that were stationed in Alaska for a few years, however they got new assignments and living else where now. My dad was stationed in Alaska for 11 months a couple decades ago, but he said it's not always freezing ass cold up there, hell he's got pictures of him in short sleeves. Although those winters are really a kick in the balls.

When you get that bike post up some pics!:dthumb:

Summers are a blast. 3 months of constant sunshine except for a few hours at night. So day riding takes on a whole new meaning. Great scenery, it is spectacular if you love the outdoors for those 3 months. I actually went swimming in the lakes it gets that warm. Then winter comes, there is almost no fall. It is like 2 days long if even that, seriously. It just starts snowing and gets dark all the time. That lasts for about 6 months. Then you have the best and most wonderful 3rd and final season of Alaska, BREAKUP! When everything is nothing but a big, salty mud slushy for 3 months. Alaska is a great place to vacation, but a terrible place to live. Especially if you are a kid.

Oh, I lived there the summer Mt. Spurr erupted and ash was everywhere right before winter set in. That breakup was even more amusing with a nice layer of ash cover by snow.

The ZZ is essentially the same as the 2000-2002 ZX-6R. It's a more street-oriented 600, as the 2003-on 600 Ninja has become more race track focused. The December 2005 issue of Motorcycle Consumer News tested the ZZ against the other 600 streetbikes, the Honda F4i and Yamaha's YZF600. The ZZ had the best engine, best gearbox, and excellent value. All three testers agreed that it needs an aftermarket rear shock.

In December,1969 my flight stopped in Fairbanks to refuel on the way to Vietnam. At least the weather was nicer in Nam.

I spent four years at Elmendorf, I bought a bike ('82 Honda Sabre V45) my last summer up there, riding up there was great. There are some amazing sights. You can't take a bad picture up there.
BUT I don't miss the winters. I'm currently station in Alabama, and the year round riding has me spoiled !!
I see the high for Anchorage is 1 degree today. I'll pop a wheelie for you on my way home from work.
