Hey guys! Need your troubleshoot expertise please.........

When I bought my bike from a friend of mine, the bike had sat in his garage for over two years, the gas tank was severly rusted and it eventually had a hole on the tank, but other than that the bike was in excellent condition...it only had 500+ miles on it.

When I bought it, I took it to Yamaha dealership to have a new tank put on and carb cleaned & other maintenance things to get it running again.

But ever since then, gas keeps leaking when I park it after riding. I took it to Yamaha, mechanin initialy thought it was the oring...but it turned out it wasnt...... and while it was their it didnt even leak at all according to the mechanic.

mechanic said since the tank had been badly rusted ... it might be causing something in the carbs to clog up and that maybe why its leaking after I park it. His advise was to just ride it around...and it shuld clear it up after a few tank refills...... but it still leaking as of today. I just uploaded a pic of the leak (waiting for mods to approve it)..will attach it to this thread soon as they do.



Is there some sort of fuel additive I can use???? Otherwise Ill have to get the carbs cleaned again.

The first thing I would do is take the tank to my workbench to see if the tank or petcock is leaking. If not, it has to be the fuel line or carbs. If the line is dry, but one or more of the vent lines from the carbs are wet, the carb is leaking. There is probably rust or debris between the float valve and seat.

If it was my bike, I would put a fuel filter in the gas line or replace one if it's there. Then I would take the petcock off, take it apart and clean it. Then I would take the fuel line from the petcock to the carb and flush it with gas (you don't want any more clogs). Then I would clean the carbs. If the carbs are a bear to take off and put back on, I might even replace all the float needles and seats. But that's how I am.

When I was a kid, I would see riders take a rubber hammer to their carbs. They were trying to dislodge a piece of rust or debris from the float needle/seat. But back then the bikes only had one or two carbs.

I would think it is NOT a good idea to add anything to fix this. Find the problem first! In the meantime, don't park on any blacktop if you have any there! (which I doubt you do)

Anyway, I think NW is right. Take the tank off and see if that is what is leaking. Then work your way thru the system. You might have some rotted fuel lines from sitting for so long with gas in them. I would just replace all the fuel lines and add/replace a fuel filter in the system.

Then when putting it all back together... replace all those pinch style clamps with screw style clamps. I almost always do that on everything. Those pinch style SUCK! and can loose their tension and then not do what they are designed to do.

Do all of this before you touch the carbs. The carbs are going to take more time, talent, and maybe skill. This will eliminate everything but those...

Look for the obvious first.
Is it coming from the filler cap? Some bikes will leak at the cap when over filed. This will run out one of the tubes at the bottom of the bike.
If it comes out around the cap. Its usually a crimped, clogged or missing vent or over flow tube.
