Any one here work the dreaded graveyard shift?! Reason for me asking is that I now have to work nights. My schedule "was" 12 hrs of 2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off 7a.m. till 7 p.m.... Starting this Friday I'll be working 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. (Same schedule) I'm wondering how people do it. Is it easy? Has any one made the transition from days to night? How did you do it?

I know this is going to be terribly hard for me since I'm one of those wacky people that wake up at 4-5 a.m. automatically, even on my days off. If I know I'll be going out with friends on the week ends I'll take a nap so I can stay up past 11 p.m. ha! I honestly don't know how I'm going to do this. Working this night shift entitled me to a $6.08 raise. So of course I'm not going to be an idiot and not take the new shift, even tho I feel it will eventually kill me.

I get bounced around from shift to shift here at work. But I work five days straight. 8 hour shifts. I know when I was working from 11 p.m.-7 a.m., it was hard as hell to stay in a good sleep rotation because the weekend would just screw it up again. So going in on Sunday night always sucked. Then Tuesday-Thursday, I would be on schedule and the weekend would come and throw my sleep off again. But you work the whole 2 on, 2 off type of shifts so I wouldn't know. That sounds like the rotations the cops on base work sometimes. I do know that 12 hour shifts blow! :luck:

Weekends are going to kill you. You will want to go back to normal on weekends and like DL said...Sundays will be awful.

I work 3am to 12noon M-F. Its tough. You'll never get used to it if you try to resume normal hours on weekends. You've gotta commit to the schedule if you want to feel normal as far as sleep.

Just try your best to get on a get up, go to work, do daily task and then back to bed routine. Its very hard to stay on this routine because everybody you know will be off work while you sleep. Then like suggested before. The weekend will mess every thing up.:cursin: :luck:

I work swing shift all the time. A few days prior you need to start staying up later and later. Then the first one will suck. But you'll sleep good after work. Close the blinds and sleep till you wake up.. (no alarm clock) If there are alot of sounds during the day where you live... put a TV on at a low volume just enough to drown out the back noise.

If you are doing this only during the week... I suggest you stay on midnights for the most part. Sleep in till like noon then stay up till like 3 am or so.. that way its not too far off your sked.

Right now I'm on 24 hours a day for 7 days and then 7 days off. But my future sked will be 12 hours shift days for 7 days, 2 days off, 7 days of midnights, 5 days off and repeat!

I realize the repercussions of working nights: no social life, less riding, missing everything..... But I don't know if it'll be forever. Actually, where I work they have a bidding system. They place jobs on the "board" and you can sign your name to them. Doesn't meant that you'll get it, the people with the most seniority will most likely receive the job (no this isn't a union shop, but you'd think it were) First chance I get I'm signing off my job. Second shift I know I can handle. And as for the $, right now I'm looking for my own home, so $6+ extra an hour is a nice chunk of change. When I think about it, I wont be missing much. I honestly have zero social life as it is. This is why I have cats.. ha! ha!

I'll keep y'all up to date. Maybe it wont be so bad. There are no shirts on night shift, so at lest I won't have the "man" breathing down my neck any more.. :)

I just came off of 3 weeks of 12-16 hr shift 6pm - 6am or more 7 days a week. It didn't really bother me all that much because Alabama sucks, so I didn't really have anything to do during the day anyway. Night shift is alright, you just can't get anything done because you are asleep when everything else is open.

I worked graveyard shifts on one of my past jobs...I'm like you Im at at 5 am regardless of what day it is..so graveyard was boring....

but the plus side was I got to take classes during the day and run around town while everyone was at work.

I used to work a 6pm to 6am shift, four days a week. It was nice to get 3 days off, in a row, but the transition from that schedule to a "normal" schedule took 2 days. One to get out of it, one to get back into it. Brutal, for me.

See Shan...you're not suppose to do that!

But nights aren't all bad. You have all of your "days" off, so you can ride while everybody is still at work. I'm not sure about you people but I don't do much during the work week anyway, so what's the difference.

The one thing I like about nights at my work, is that there is no boss, techs, or other people around to bug you.

ok, yesterday I took a 2- 2 1/2 hr nap but crawled into bed at 10:30, stayed up till around midnight. And now as you can see, it's 5:15 a.m. CST and I'm awake! I actually woke up at 4:45ish. I don't know how I'm going to be able to do this... UGH!
