Have you ever hosted a group ride?
Have you ever been on a group ride?

What did you like? What did you not like?

Were there rules, or was it a free-for-all.

Any crashes?

Would you do it again?

i attended one of my husband's co-worker's wedding 2 summers ago. it was a harley wedding, about 50 harleys showed up. after the ceremony we all headed out on a group lap around town. it took us about 30 mins. i was riding my father in law's v-rod, so i fit in with the others. we took turns blocking intersections and everything. it was fun, but not something i'd want to do all the time. it was neat to be able to take part in that though. thankfully it went smoothly, no incidents or accidents. but then again, it was a short ride.

Never hosted personally, but WOS has group rides which I go on and enjoy. We always have the basic group ride rules (formation, signals, etc.) and go over them prior to the ride.

As for crashes, yes on 2 group rides - one crash was a newbie and a newbie mistake (I was right behind him too) he saw gravel in a turn, freaked and grabbed a handful of brake and bam. He was ok, bike with low-side damage.

The second crash was a TWF member - Sime. Now that was rather scary, he was knocked unconcious, ambulance and the whole 9 yards. The bike was totally wrecked, he ended up with minor injuries & concussion.

Well I too have did the group rides with WOS. And over the years I was in the club we averaged about 5 or 6 crashes a season. Which 90% of them were all newbies trying to show up/keep up/ or "not" loose face. Which they did not keep up, they showed how well their bike slides on its side and lost face by actin like a fool causing themselves to crash...

I like riding with a group. Its nice and feels really cool. Not too mention it sounds cool too! :dthumb:

There was rules. Like Pippi said...signals and such. But there were also rules such as staggered form when cruising, then single file with good distance when in the twisties. Plus no passing unless waved forward. We would also try to warn people not to try the above stuff and cause a crash.

For a while there... the club even tossed around the idea of making a requirement of helmet, gloves, and a jacket. But I left the club shortly after all of that (not cause of that) and I'm not sure if they did much more about that.

Now I have also participated in many disorganized group rides when everybody is getting lost and its just  and those I HATE!!! You end up just wasting your day doing circles and getting no real riding in!!

Would I ride with on another group? Yes, even with WOS maybe... but for now I have had my fill of dis-organized rides and riding with newbies trying to show boat!!

I've never hosted any group rides. I did try to organize a ride with some ppl from another state, but that didn't pan out. Only one showed up. Either way, it was a blast! I've been on group rides. We had the normal signals, everyone behaves. If some is hell bent on riding up on one, then we would all back off. I myself ride in back, like bumblebee. I'm bright yellow so I can be seen :D but also I have less chance of being involved if someone wads it. We've had a few minor spills, but nothing serious, Thank God!

I will once I get my house organize a group ride again. See if ppl want to stay a long week end, BBQ out and the such. :)

I have hosted a few types of rides. I hosted an "all girls" ride and I hosted a "slow ride." What I hated about most group rides (at least in the NOVA area) is everyone wanted to go balls to the wall, and everyone was at different experience levels...it's one thing if it's a group like WOS where they all know each other, but general group rides can be really dangerous.

I posted on a local board I was involved with and hosted a "slow ride." I made it clear it was going to be a fun ride that was not going to be 20 people riding around at 100 mph...It would never be more than 15 over the limit (I had about 500 miles under my belt of riding)...that's it. Well, to my surprise, 50 people showed up. We wound up dividing into three groups, a fast, medium and slow. We gave instructions and rules to the groups before we left and it turned out to be a lot of fun.

I just prefer riding with a group of people that I know, that way I am familiar with their riding skills, that way I don't have to worry about some idiot who doesn't know how to ride riding over his head and taking me out.

I do a pretty big group ride to the Carlisle Bike show every summer. More guys show up each year. We had almost 30 guys this year. Mostly older doods on cruisers. I think we had 3 sportbikes. The one guy I didn't know was riding a brand new 600rr and the other guy was a good friend of mine who I ride with quite a bit.

Pretty relaxed 50 mile ride...couple of stops. No one gets crazy. Haven't had any crashes...although some of you will remember me losing my oil drain plug on this years ride. I keep her up though. And apparently a couple other guys had minor issues this year...but no crashes. ***knock on wood***
