TOKYO - Honda Motor Co. has developed airbags for motorcycles that the Japanese automaker says is the world's first for production motorcycles.

The airbag, which inflates after sensors detect an oncoming crash, will be available on the new Gold Wing motorcycle that will go on sale in spring 2006 in the United States, Honda said Thursday.

Tokyo-based Honda said the airbags will reduce injuries in head-on collisions.

The airbag opens in front of the riders and reduces the speed at which they get thrown off the motorcylcle, lessening injuries when they hit the road or another vehicle, it said.

absolutely ludricous.. let's repeal helmet laws and add airbags.. hmm there is a novel idea.. i did see a pack of goldwingers i cut off in my cage the other day - oh no the big bad goldwingers are going to sodomize me on the side of m14 in broad daylight - maybe I should have interviewed them about their thoughts on the new airbags and how them driving 45mph on m14 and me locking them up in front of them causing them to fall like dominoes might help them in their predicament..

before any lamenuts gets all torqued up i didn't really cut off any goldwingers.. that was merely for entertainment purposes only - but i really did see them and they were doing 45mph in a 70mph zone..

the air bag is stupid.. you think HD will follow suit or the new GSXR 1K will have one within 2 years? not..

I saw this on the news tonight....well they only showed a Gold Wing in action with the airbag....I think this would be a stupid move on a sportbike!! Any kind of accident or lay down of any kind would probably set the sensor off. Then 2k just to get the thing re sensored and stuffed back in or replaced. I'll pass because you know you're going over the bars or off the side or back in a collision.
