You know, when riding? As in, if a vehicle pulled out NOW... where would you go? In heavy traffic I'm constantly going through "what if" scenarios. Maybe it's the cop in me, but I always like to know what my options are.

Anyone else obsess about this or is it just me?

I try not to think about stuff like this, however it happens all the time. Every scenario is different and it's just one of those things you won't know until the situation occurs. I am a quick thinker, so that helps.
I am just always prepared. If I see a car about to pull out at an intersection..I just assume they are. I either grasp the brakes, or get ready to swirve, what ever I gotta do.

if I'm in traffic, I try to keep an out at all times. I never stay in a blind spot, stay away from the right lane during exits, stay in the far side of the lane when approaching a road, etc. But just cause you gotta plan doesn't mean it's gonna work, haha

Im constantly scanning for alternate exit routes if something happens in front of me. off onto the shoulder or pass drivers side, leave enough following distance to swerve away from roadkill or stop in time if they slam on their brakes.

yeah, ur almost crazy not to always have an escape route planned out every time you change from your current riding position in traffic.

I'm always scanning... due to taking many defensive driving coarses thru my work. The latest and greatest is The Smith System and it's 5 keys...

Part of that is also figuring out what others are going to do and identify ALL intersections. Which aren't just near stop signs and traffic lights. They are everywhere when a car is changing direction...

How often does it happen during a ride that you're surprised by an unexpected cager appearing next to you because you weren't scanning?

All the time, including when there's no traffic. There's no telling when deer will emerge from the woods.

I am constantly playing "What If..." when I'm going down the road in any vehicle...but I'm more diligent about it on the bike. So, no...It's not just you, Shan :D

I was always so tired from scanning on major highways. Now I avoid the highways and take the streets, backroads and small highways. Takes more time, but I enjoy the ride more. More shifting, more braking, more accelerating, and more corners instead of the constant straight-line droning and scanning. Cruisers are for the highway, sportbikes are for backroads. In motorcycling, it's the enjoyment of the ride, not how fast you get there.

That and G.O.A.L. work for all driving. :dthumb:
