I was talking to a guy that said he hasn't changed his in a year, but he justified it by saying he doesn't ride much. Seems that would be a good reason to change it more frequently?

Really if your not riding it much than I would think the oils own shelf life would come into play. But the filter, once oil has passed though it and started a debree clean out then sat at Idel for months, would incline me to change out the filter due to dried up composits that have inbedded in the filter and solitified. Or carboned up. That would restrict the oil flow when you go riding again. If the rides are short and frequent I would do the 3000 miles. If the rides are few and FAR between I would do a lot more filters for sure. :2cents:

Sitting for long periods, especially in the humid South, condensation will form on the inside of the motor and will get into the oil. Plus any suspended particulites in the oil will have lots of time to settle on the bottom, only to be recirculated...I change my oil/filter every 4 to 6 weeks regardless...It is still the cheapest maintenance... :dthumb: Plus it gives me a reason to sit out in the garage drinking beer :wink:

I've been changing mine before each trackday, which I'm guessing is about every 1000 miles or less :scratch: . I get about one change per month from April-October.

It is more expensive than changing oil on a car,but it is cheap than blowing the motor, clutch, or gears. :2cents:

oil is the life of your bike

my rule of thumb is every 2 to 3000 miles think about your engine will only last longer and i dont know if youve noticed it or not but you get a small power boost right after changing it but thats just me i probably spend about as much time cleaning my bike as i do riding so i guess it depends on how much you love your bike

Yeah, every race the race bikes get changed.

Silkolene is now donating product so this will make things cheaper for me. This is some of the best oil I have used. The Scotts lifetime filter is bad MFR. It cost about the same as 10 oil filters but lasts forever and is a grade away from being able to filter bloodcells.Awesome!!!

I think F4i and Twisty have the right idea. Plus as Twisty said, the Scotts oil filter is AWESOME and a great investment especially if you plan on changing your oil often or having your bike for a while!

But as Bee said... the filter is going to be the weakest link there!

And like F4i said... oil changes are cheap in comparison!

um don't i qualify for some donation product coming my way? i am the jerky supplier, although due to my busy-ness I have been slacking on you this year.. I will get it together though.. How much is that silkolene compared to Amsoil? I just switched to Amsoil and it is sweet.. I change my every 1,500 miles. Probably should do it like F4 does though and change it more often because I think you run it harder at the track, etc.

I always change the oil and filter before every track day. That's almost always less than 3k street miles.

As for the original question, based on a street only rider that puts on very few miles a year...I would change it once a year at a minimum, more like twice.

Well, I'm the odd man out. I ride 50mi at a time and put on probably 4k-5k per season. I only change the oil once per season, mostly b/c I have yet to see any real evidence of needing to do it more often. Folks I've discussed this with who have put on >100k mi suggest that I'm not out of my gourd, but to each his own.

But, I don't do track days (yet), nor do I stunt, so I'm probably a lot gentler on my ride than most. Track days would probably drive me to do a change before/after.

Oh, and I only use dino oil.

I was going nuts with the Dino oil. I think I would just get bored, and change the oil. Never over 3k, sometimes as early as 500 miles. During break in I changed it at 30 miles, 150 miles, 1000 miles, then on to regular intervals. Now I am running synthetic, and its been over 3k. I was led to believe that was fine with synthetic, but now I am starting to get antsy to change it again. But damn, that will get pricey. Clutch is starting to get noisy as well, been wondering if the clutch is on its way out, or if its the oil.

Needless to say, I'm not sure which im putting back in next time.

Guys at my shop said that since I'm not racing, stunting, etc. that every 4k should be fine...and that matches up pretty darn close with the service intervals in the bike manual. I am probably going to switch to doing it around 3k just for safety's sake though. Darn thing doesn't run QUITE as easy after about 3500.
