A buddy of mine just installed a RSC Hyperpro steering damper on his 2004 Yamaha R6.

I hadn't heard too much about this damper just wondering what some others think about it. I'd say he made a good judgement sice he always does his research and homework before he buys.

Here are some pics.

I emailed him some thoughts off here and he just wrote me back, I didn't include GM's thoughts on it, mainly just speedwerks thoughts. Here's what he had to say...

Bird,

Thaks for the info. I have also done tons of research on this unit and hyperpro's background before i buy. (i always research major purchases to death on anything i buy) Its true hyperpro had issues back in 200 and 2001 with leaky oil seals. most found that if they did leak it was tiny drops on the piston not a all out flood of fluid and hyperpros warrenty dept was very quick to replace and most riders were then happy. A lot of people steer'd away from them because of that. its natural to find a few older racers and users that remember thoes days.

However, in 2002 they got there stuff right! The faulty oil seals have not been a problem in 4 years since the redesign. i have found literally thousands of reviews and r6net real life trials of ppl who were iffy at first to give them another shot but decided to and have been very satisfied. A few ppl have already had the hyperpro in place for over 30k miles and no issues. Most 2004 R6 riders bought them as a first mod and now have over 12k of perfect use from them. It was simply a old design flaw and it really drug there name in the ground. i admit i was nervous to even hear there ever was a problem but everythign i can find now says its a awsome product. its also rebuildable, and can accept other piston sizes so it can be modified and used on other bikes that require longer stroke. On top of this hyperpro has just about the best warrenty in the business.

i dont agree with most racers using GPR. that is really the cheapest damper on the market at around $275 to $315. It has usually only 1 speed circut and its not easily rebuilt. Most racers i have found do not like gpr. THey use scotts.... and almost always the rotary style damper since its small and holds up in a crash. I would have gotten the rotary but i cant stand the look of them.

2001 model was the last time a leaky hyperpro was ever reported. ive literally searched hundreds of pages and tons of user reviews as well as IM'ed about 10 users on the messagenet that had them on 2004's asking them all the same question. "how do u like it, do u suggest i get one for my 2004" I got 10 excellent responses.

Thanks for looking out for me!

Good on him for doing the research.

yes. research. thats what the internet is for. i love it.

personally tho, i would go with the scotts for nearly the same money, because of the crash factor. them things are expensive. i dont want to have to replace that too if i go down. plus, opposite to your friend, i like how the scotts looks much better.

yeah for the same money... why not go with something that NO ONE says is trash? why take the chance? personally... I like the looks of the scott better anyways:2cents:

i fully agree. The Scotts look better, perform great, completely rebuildable, and virtually industructable during any form of a crash!

I guess we'll find out if he got screwed when he starts riding here in the next couple months. I guess different people on different forums recommend different products.

I guess all those leaking hyperpros I've watched John at CTR rebuild at the track must have been put on '03-'05 model year bikes in 2001

And you'll find just as many GPR dampers at the track as Scotts, Ohlins, Sprint, etc, all of which are fine products. Maybe he'll be lucky and get a hyperpro that doesn't leak.

I think it's great he researched on the internet before making a purchase ... it's a shame that the internet isn't a good source of information a lot of the time.

He doesn't run his R6 on the track, just runs it hard as hell in the twisty's on the street.

My friend read this thread, and here's what he had to say:

scotts is a dirtbike brand w/ some street products

i like scotts. i appreciate the concern but im going to hyprpro a shot and see what happens. and im not worried about it breaking since i have a 2k extra parts clause on the insurance for a wreck or parts that break.

if it leaks ill send er back, no big deal

He wants to see some horror stoires of the new generation ones that "leak" and then some horror stories of other brand dampers.
He said, "if they dont have a hyperpro or havent seen one fail first hand then its all opinion to me. they shouldent bash it untill they have a reason."
oh and roach, that sprint brand is along the lines of shindy. there is no way in hell thoes 2 models are better than a hyperpro.
