Dolly Scientist Gets Human Cloning License

The British government on Tuesday gave the creator of Dolly the Sheep a human cloning license for medical research.

It is the second such license approved since Britain became the first country to legalize research cloning in 2001.

The Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority, which regulates such research, approved the license for Ian Wilmut, who led the team that created Dolly at Scotland's Roslin Institute in 1996.

He applied in September to Britain's fertility authority for a human cloning license to study how nerve cells go awry to cause motor neuron disease.

The first license was granted in August to a team at Newcastle University that hopes to use cloning to create insulin-producing cells that could be transplanted into diabetics.

Such work, called therapeutic cloning because it does not result in a baby, is opposed by abortion foes and other biological conservatives because researchers must destroy human embryos to harvest the cells.

Wilmut and motor neuron expert Christopher Shaw of the Institute of Psychiatry in London plan to clone cells from patients with the incurable muscle-wasting disease, derive blank-slate stem cells from the cloned embryo, make them develop into nerve cells and compare their development with nerve cells derived from healthy embryos.

The mechanism behind motor neuron disease is poorly understood because the nerves are inaccessible in the brain and central nervous system and cannot be removed from patients.

Cloning is not that big of a deal.. Some people pay $50k to clone their cats but basically it is no different than picking up a stray that looks like your cat at the animal pound - they will NOT be the same cat unless they have the exact same experiences, etc. and even then they wouldn't because each living being is unique no matter the physical makeup.. Cloning is no more advanced than artificial insemenation.. It is just like having two of the same car - one is a lemon and one is a great car - how is that? Because although the assembly process is identical the break in differed, tolerance on one part was at one end of the spectrum and the other one was at the other end, etc. It is impossible to clone something and for it to be exactly the same..

Oh and as far as using it to help the diabetics - short term solution.. No short cut to the truth - change of diet is in order - genetics and diabetes and cancer, etc. is all bs.. It is all based on lifestyle and diet - 99.9999999999999999999999%.. The only use that would be is if they replaced the cells and then the person changed their lifestyle, diet, etc. Otherwise you are pissing in the wind.. I could see a use of cloning for something like that.. I didn't read it much the first time.. But cloning a complete human or animal is a waste of time..

How long have YOU been diabetic...or are you speaking about something you know very little about? Not everyone becomes diabetic because of diet.

double2000r6 you speek half truth we had a disscution on stem cell reasearch today and it can and will eventually cure almost everything that is genetic or passed down by genes and i am all for it as long as it stays in the hands of profesionals and is not missabused but everyone has :2cents: on this my teacher has a kid with diabetisis..... or however you spell it ...... and is really into this so she constantly talks about it any way i dont see the harm in it if the technique stays in the hands of responsible people :dthumb:

Oh I'm sorry, I speak of a 25 year study that traces diabetic back to your diet & lifestyle (exercise, personality, spritual enrichment, etc.) and was done by some of the most brillant minds on the face of this planet.. But what would I know right? There is a small percentage linked to genes. But mainly it is diet and lifestyle. But to answer your question I am borderline hypoglycemic, due in large part to binge drinking in my younger days, and I have several members of my family who are diabetic so I am well aware of the situation and speak from experience and study of the subject. We could possibly start another thread and discuss this subject in great detail if you would like.. I am more than prepared to prove to you that diet and lifestyle play a key role in everything from diabetes to cancer. My point was this - advances in medicine and science are great when they can clone healthly cells but unless you get to the root cause that caused the problem in the first place you are just buying time and pissing in the wind.. Something like your bike fouls a plug due to a mechanical problem - so you replace the plug but don't fix the problem - what did you solve? Nothing because the plug will just foul again. You have to get to the root of the problem to fix it.

yeah, and how long is that gonna happen...its already happening somewhere right now..where some complete idiot is messing w/ the human gene structure to create the ultimate person in his eyes.. its only gonna get worse. If/when this actually becomes legal and an everyday practice..its all downhill IMO.

I really wanna go into the religous aspect of this, but NO WAY, not on a motorcycle forum.

You are speaking from someone who has damaged his body from abuse, much like exposeure to toxic substances whether intentional or not. I am speaking as someone who has diabetes from a genetic stand point, some one who watched his 25 year old nephew die 1 piece at a time until he passed away 1 year ago last Saturday. who did not smoke or drink or consume hardly any sugar because all of us in our family get the gift of diabetes shortly after our 21st birthday. Of course you would lump us in with your limited knowledge and deny us the opportunity to search for a cure for something handed to us while you did it to yourself.

Not true my friend not true. Yes I did it to myself - my bad. I am very sorry for your loss. But if your nephew ate processed foods and did not maintain a lifestyle conducive to the prevention of diabetes than it is very likely that his diet and lifestyle came into play with his diabetes.. I am not looking to debate you on what is fair in life and what I did versus what he didn't or anything like that.. It is terrible that you lost him.. It is very true that genetics will determine the likelihood of you getting a disease like diabetes.. But it is also true that the same people with the same genes could live two different lives and 1 with the typical processed foods - even without sugar or smoking or drinking would get it and the other person (same no smoking, etc.) would eat certain foods, maintain a decent workout regime, etc. and never get it. The statistics are overwhelming. I can tell you down to the infinite detail what causes diabetes and how it works and I am telling you that practioners in this nation who put a blind eye to alternative medicines and nutrition are lying to you - they would rather prescribe insulin and pills and tell you there is nothing you could have done to prevent it, etc. and all the sheep of America buy into it or are too lazy to do their own research.. I am telling you bro you have NO idea.. Regardless what does my medical situation have to do with anything? That had no weight or bearing on my point and has no impact on my knowledge of the subject.. I merely told you my situation as a courtesy because you asked.. Not that it is your or anyone's business.. I am not quite sure where you are coming from but if you would like better information I can point you in the right direction because you are obviously misled, which is not a bad thing it just is - the American Medical Association spends billions to keep us in the dark and they do a good job at it.. Sometimes you have to look outside what they tell you to find the truth..

i dont see why as long as everyone keeps it cool but i do believe in god and i also in a way believe in evolution i guess i am christain with my own beliefs ??? idk but thats what i belive and i dont know if AN everyday joe could just find the recipe to the cloning and do it you got to be a freak to know thios stuff but if it gets kept with the scients then why not??
