First of all, you should use the ignition key to turn the engine off, not the emergency switch.

I have always used the engine switch and not the ignition to kill my bikes...

What do you use and why...

I've always used the kill switch.

I was told that it was a good idea because you build up memory of where it is, so in the event that you really need it you don't have to think about it.

I always used the ignition switch mainly just to prevent wearing out the contacts in the kill switch. Most of them being plastic with small metal spring tabs inside- I've had them develop weak tabs and had to play with the switch to get good contact after a while. (this being on atv's with a similar design kill switch)

I'll use the kill switch when I park on a steep slope and have my hands occupied with the clutch and brake, otherwise always use ignition switch. Like any electric switch, either can cause trouble, but the ignition switch less so. Plus, like Tommytom says, there's a reason they call it an emergency stop switch.

I try to use the kill switch, because if the fan needs to run for an extra minute or so it will.. I know some models the fan will keep going even with the ignition turned off and key out, but not mine.

If you use the ignition key to turn off the engine, you may not leave the key in the ignition. Not that I've ever done that. I sometimes use the kill switch to hear if my fan is working when my engine is hot. But the water pump is not circulating fluid then, so the engine isn't really cooling.

True. Just the radiator gets the benefit of daring the battery.
