Richard Abruzzo, one of the most experienced pilots in gas ballooning, is recovering in a Kansas hospital after falling out of his gas balloon.
Abruzzo of Albuquerque and copilot Carol Rymer Davis of Denver were participating in the Gordon Bennett gas balloon race when gusty winds knocked their balloon into a power line.
Abruzzo fell out, authorities say. Davis got the balloon under control and landed about ten miles away. She was unhurt.
Power crews took Abruzzo to a Garden City, Kan., hospital, and returned to fix the power.
Abruzzo broke several bones, including his chin and his pelvis. His broken wrist may require surgery.
Abruzzo is said to be in good spirits.
Abruzzo and Davis were the winning team in last year’s Gordon Bennett race, which was in Europe. Their win brought the race to the United States.
