I noticed some scattered discussion on this topic in other threads and thought it might be nice to get a thread together for new riders to look in and maybe get an idea of what they're in for based on where they live. Gas, Need, Capt. and the other "old dogs" in the neighborhood can I please get some help here? :D

I'm in WA state and just recently bought my bike (Suzuki SV650S, 2k5) as well as completed the MSF basic rider course.

In this state, riders are not required to carry insurance on their bikes. HOWEVER, in case of an accident you may be required to post a $25,000 CASH bond. Also, if you're riding a new bike (especially a financed one) then it's probably a bad idea for your wallet NOT to have it. As much as I detest the insurance industries, it's more irresponsible in my book to not have it. Also, Suzuki finance does not require insurance on this particular bike. I do not know if they do on any of their "bigger" bikes.

Thanks Everyone!

Well, I'm not sure if Indiana actually REQUIRES insurance on the bike or not, but they DO ask for your insurance policy number when you register, so I imagine it's required. However, I also feel that it would be foolish to finance a bike and not have insurance on it. Now, I only had liability on my Katana, but those bikes aren't exactly stolen that often. As for the R6, it will carry full coverage for as long as I have it/ride it on the street. I may turn it into a track bike at some point in the future and thus drop coverage, but that certainly won't be anytime soon.
