Hey, I found this article on MSN which tells you a lot about the facts and figures of the military, specifically the Army and the personnel that it has, has in Iraq and other things.

It was interesting to me so I figured I'd share it.

I heard a news report yesterday saying that the biggest threat to the American military branches is the ever expanding American waistline. There are tons or recruiting age men and women willing and wanting to join up, but they simply do not meet the weight requirements, and are unable to lose enough to make it in as well.

I'd have no problem there, if anything they'd tell me I need to gain weight. Seems how I can't gain a pound and I eat all day long. It will come later in life.

Women should not even be in the military, they should be home cooking, cleaning and making babies! LMAO KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did read an article a while back about getting involvement from criminals in the military. People serving life in prison etc. Big debate.

Also talk of "relaxing" those weight restrictions too! I dont know whats worse, not having enough soldiers, or having a bunch of soldiers stuck at the first wall because their fat asses can't climb over it!

Personally, I think every one should have to serve between ages of 17 and 21, with 2 years of active service. If someone as fat/lazy as me could do it...everyone can...

Um, this is not Germany! Should be a matter of choice to join the military. Personally I opted for college and immediately getting my education. Had no desire to join military. For some its a great option, since many cannot afford to pay for their education etc. But to force or make it mandatory is just insane.

I thought about joining the military. I dont think I would have been the best canadate due to my big mouth but now looking back on it, There is side of me that wishes I would have done it. But I dont take orders, disrespect, or people screaming @ me so it was probley a good idea not to join.

I highly respect any man or women that has served. No matter what war we are fighting, I will always support "OUR" troops.

I know that when I was doing "hometown recruiting" in the summer of 2002, there was a kid that was joining up and they were making him take Exlax so he can make the weight. The Army, at least, realizes this and is changing or in the process of changing the requirements because there are a bunch of soldiers that lift weights and other situations that don't believe it is right that they have such stringent weight restrictions. They've been looking into it for like a year now. Things change slowly in the Army, or military in general, but very, very slowly.

I didn't know that Germany does that. However I do know that Isreal requires males for four years and women for two years (or something like that) right out of high school.

I think that it would be a great idea for the U.S. Government to make EVERYONE no matter what family you are from (ie: Kenedy, Hilton, etc) to join the military right out of High School. It is just my :2cents: , but if you don't serve then you really have no right to critize what the military does. It's kind of like what people tell me about voting, since I'm not registered (for my own personal reasons), then I don't have a comment on politics. I have my views, I just don't express them openly. :2cents: :2cents: :2cents: :2cents:

People will lose weight in the military, I did when I was in Basic and AIT. I went in weighing like 165 and left Basic Training weighing at liek 130. However, the only bad thing is that once you become "permanent party", the physical side of the military is not as demanding as when in Basic and AIT so anyone will gain weight unless they take the time to exercise on their own. Now depending on the unit, there may not be the time permitted to do so and still do what you need to accomplish after being at 'work' all day (ie: relax, spend time with family, etc).

I believe every male in Germany serves for 2 years following school. Or at least use to be that way. Guy that works for my company is a German citizen, living with family in US. I remember him talking about he and his family becoming US citizens so his son would not have to enter the German military.
To say that people have no right to criticize the military unless they serve in it, is a bit odd. I mena after all they have a right to criticize, expecially when they are paying taxes, which pay for military expenses/ salaries etc. So in that sense, they do have a right cause they pay for it.

Then in turn, why is it ok for people to tell me that since I'm not a registered voter and don't vote, then I don't have any say in what goes on in the Whitehouse or government in general?

But I don't agree with a lot that the military does and the fact that we seem to be more interested in world opinion of us. Being the most powerful nation in the world, I think that we should look into fixing the problems and bad situations in our own country before we go out spending billions and billions of dollars on other countries which I have seen no improvement over. Take the G8 Summit for instance, how much money has the US given to countries in Africa? and how much improvement has been made? :2cents: :2cents: :2cents: :2cents: :2cents: :2cents:

On a side note, I AM NOT TRYING TO TURN THIS THREAD INTO A POLITICAL CONTROVERSY THREAD. These replies by myself and others should just be taken as OPINIONS only!
