I am a newbie, still looking :readng: for my first bike - hopefully a SV650s. I am looking at jackets, and I noticed some have that pad on the back that looks to protect the upper spine. Do all jackets have this? I was looking at some of the ones from AGV. I want a really padded jacket, because if - or maybe when- I fall, I want to stand up afterwards. I think that is everyones thought too  Ne recommendations on good padded jackets? I would like to spend 200-300 for a jacket, but a little more is ok if the jacket is really good. Thank you.

:welcome: Not all jackets will come with padding in the back... some will come with CE approved shoulder & elbow protection...that has a back compartment for back protection. if you want stronger back protection than the pad some jackets come with...search the websites most sell more advanced back protection.

How much is enough? I guess it depends on the severity of your fall, how you fall, your speed etc. Like ne1469 said, not all jackets come with back protection. You can buy it as a seperate piece of equipment, though.

Something like this:

My jacket came with the CE approved pads in the shoulder and arms. The back had a pocket where this soft spongy thing went in. I bought a spine protector on Ebay that fit in the pocket. My spine feels much safer now. Yeah, if you spend between 300-350 you'll get a decent jacket. You can see if some have the pocket in the back for padding. If not you can buy something like what Shan posted.

How much is enough? I can't tell you because your budget and priorities aren't the same as mine.

My track suit has built-in CE spine/back armor but my street suits only have soft back/spine armors.

If you're going to buy one of those back armors to wear separately then you need to try out your jacket while wearing one of those things to make sure that the jacket fits with the extra bulk underneath it.

How much do you think you're worth? That's the question I always ask myself. I know I'm worth more then what the manufactures can produce as far as gear, so for me I only buy the best.(or at least try to) I like AGV a lot. I like your choice of jacket. In my opinion, I think "camel humps" are going a little to far. Most street riders do not need that type of protection since most (almost all) street riders are not MotoGP or AMA racers and in no way can we as armatures ride our bikes to there true capabilities. Just remember, to always gear up before you go out and ride. Leather is cheaper then skin graphs...

I saw a jacket that had this upside-down triangle "pad" at the top of the spine... It looked more protective than the others, so I thought it would be safer. I dont want to wear ne back protectors, i perfer just a well protective Jacket.

Let me know what you think, thanks

pete
I assume you mean external back protectors... :2cents: an alternative would be as mentioned by others.... a jacket that has an internal pocket for back protection so u can slip in a stronger back protector in the jacket & will not have to carry the external back protector around.:2cents: this is what I have sliped in my Astars TZ1 internal back compartment

It's imperative to go to a shop and try stuff on. Even if you buy it on eBay or somewhere else. Go to a shop and look and stuff...take note of the model, brand, size, etc. Then you know specifics when you are searching online.:luck:

Let's not confuse the camel hump (aka speed hump) as a back protector. It's there strictly for aerodynamics reason. Back protectors are either built in or worn separately.
