I am looking for a new jacket - preferrably leather, but maybe textile. I can search the archives for recommendations (though feel free to throw some out), but what I'd really like to know is what manufacturers make jackets in "Tall" sizes. Anyone know?

Thanks!

Hey there, Homer! Can you give us a better estimate of what you mean by "tall" sizes? Are you saying you're a particularly tall guy or are you saying that your upper body is particularly tall? I know that sounds like a dumb question, but I've sized a lot of people for apparel and there really is a difference! If you tell us what kind of budget you have, what you'll be using the jacket for, and whether you like a more "subdued" look or a more "flashy" look...we'll all help you out with some recommendations! :) Also...any measurements would be helpful (particularly chest size, height, waist and arm length).

Laura

P.S. I see you're in reston, va. I used to live in Centreville! (I was born in Fairfax hospital and lived in NOVA for 31 years!) ;)

I'm tall -- don't think my torso is any longer than my legs, but then, I've never really measured to be sure.

Height = 6' 3"
Neck = 17.5
Chest = 44
Arm length = 36"
Waist = 35" (working on that)

I figured something somewhat subdued. Didn't have a particular budget in mind, but based on what I've seen out there I was figuring it would be $500 - $600.

Yeah, I've been in this area too long. I see you were smart enough to get out...

Hey, Laura will defiantly help ya out... but just as a heads up... I'm almost exactly the same size as you... (6'3" 17" 44" 37" 33") and I need a 48 for the pads in the elbow to actually be ON my elbow and not my forearm... a 46 feel's a little too tight through the mid section anyways...

hope it helps

Hey there, Homer, Let me look into a few things and see what I can find for you. You are NOT going to have to spend that much money. You'd be hard pressed to even have to spend $300 for a jacket. There's something out there for you...I'm sure there is!

A few more questions...have you tried any motorcycle jackets on yet? If so, which brands?

Your measurements fit really nicely into a lot of brands, except for your sleeve length...are you sure you are a 35"? How are you measuring? The only other thing I worry about is if the jacket will be too short. They don't give us those kinds of measurements, so trying to gauge if you've tried anything on yet and what you've experienced.

I have tried on a couple - I believe one was a Joe Rocket. Sleeves were short. Barely reached my wrist while standing, forget reaching forward. Am I sure what is 35"? My sleeve is definitely 36" -- shirts, jackets, etc.

Wow! You have long arms! ;) I sure wish I did!!!!

Most arm lengths for jackets that would fit the rest of your measurements are in the 25-27" range. How are you measuring your sleeve length (from where to where)?

Well, they are pretty much proportionate to my height. Of course, if they were an inch shorter I'd have a much easier time finding shirts.

Technically, I'm not measuring my sleeve length. My tailor is when he measures me for a suit or for dress shirts. So however they do it (I just kind of zone off).

Maybe they measure differently for motorcycle jackets? Because when I put on the size Large jackets, the sleeves were at my wrist -- not 10" shorter than my wrist.

You might have to go custom with a jacket, then, which totally stinks! The reason why is that manufacturers create apparel for the "average" person...meaning if you lift weights, drink too much beer, are too tall, too short, or any number of things that manufacturer's don't account for, then it's hard to find something to fit properly.

That being said, try on more than just one brand (if you are in an area that has more than just Joe Rocket). All gear fits differently and you may have to do what I usually have to do...buy what fits me, not what I like the best in terms of design or color. I'm in the opposite boat of you...I'm 5'0" and my doberman is taller than my inseam! My inseam is 28"...try to get comfortable on a bike or find anything that fits!

The best thing to do is go through everyone's fitting charts (I've got some of them on our site here Size Charts) and see what brand might work for best for you. If you can't find something, you may need to have something made. :( I know it's more expensive for you that way, but it's a lot cheaper than hospital bills!

I wish I had a better answer. If it makes you feel better, this is what I want to do when it comes to buying gear for myself: :bonk:

Yeah, that's why I was trying to find a manufacturer that makes "Tall" sizes. I seem to remember running across one online, but I can't remember where I saw it.

Now, how are YOU measuring the sleeve length. As I thought about it (on my way to the bar, not so much now), I believe men's garments measure the sleeve from the middle of the back at the neck to the end of the cuff. Which would obviously be a LOT different than from the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff. In fact, this is from a site that makes custom dress shirts:

How to measure your sleeve length:
Measure one arm by bending your elbow 90 degrees so that your hand rests on your hip. Hold the tape at the center back of your neck. Measure across your shoulder to your elbow, and down to your wrist. The total length in inches is your sleeve length.

I have the same problem as you. Other than being an inch shorter, we have the same measurements. The sleeves on everything are always too short (and not just by a little). Pisses me off! Shoulders are usually too tight also. I usually wear an XL tall when buying a jacket. I went with a Joe Rocket Rasp textile jacket in a XXL. Fits great everywhere except around the waist. A little too big. The jacket does have some adjustment in that area though, so I have it tightened up all the way. I feel your pain. Same thing happens when I go to buy pants. 36'' inseam. They are always too short. Good luck!
