We've had a couple of recent posts about riders going insanely fast in traffic, (one vid and one article). Some folks think it's "Cool"....! I have a background in road and drag racing (sanctioned tracks); I currently own an 1100 Suz, a Duc, and a Kawi 750R, and race a blown Suz at the local strip, so I'm no virgin:wink:, but these folks have crossed the line! I know a couple of you think I'm a doddering olde foole who drools and needs his diapers changed and should stick to riding mopeds.

I want to toss this out there for discussion; I will NOT make any other comments in this thread; I'm more interested in your thoughts than any right or wrong.

My question is: Where does my right to ride and have fun end, and the rights of others not to be unduly endangerd by my antics begin?

Let the fun begin...................................................

Here is my view on it, taken from the other thread:

Maybe people can control themselves, but can they control the guy in another vehicle that changes lanes because he didn't see someone coming up on him at triple the speed limit?

Have I done stupid stuff on the streets? Yes, I have. Will I again? I hope not. THIS is where the self-control lies, not with being able to control your bike at insanely high speeds with other people on the road. Everyone needs to think about it this way:

Would you want close members of YOUR family on that road with that rider?
oldtymer, I think you should continue to post in this thread. Sure, some people are hard-headed, but you should still argue their logic if you have a valid point (which I think you do).

My take is that bikes go like hell! Even the little 250-500's can build some speed pretty quick. People like to haul ass and show off because its fun. Some like to do this in a crowded congested area. Not sure why but they do. Personally I'm not in that catagory. I like to ride quickly where it is possible but around town or in congested traffic is not the place for me. There are times when blasting away from dangerous traffic is the best solution but thats usually because you're somewhere you shouldn't be in the first place. Mostly I think it comes down to stupid macho [email protected]#. Speeding and wreckless driving are illegal for a reason. Its just too bad everyone is so sue-happy anymore or maybe you could get a large parking lot to "play" in. The guys in Florida that had that abandoned development had it right.

:withstupi I am pretty much the same way. No monkey business in traffic.

I know I'm guilty of doing very stupid things in traffic in the past.
The 100+ lane splits were only needed from my stupidity of doing 100+ with the possibility of a cage moving in to my lane. After surviving that twice (one wasn't enough for my thick head) I slow down when approaching traffic. I try to keep my flat out speeds and stunts to the back roads if I feel the desire to do it in between track days.

Track days have also slowed me down in the twisties as well. Now, oncoming traffic, ditches, trees, guard rails etc. scare me to death. I still go way faster than I should when on the bike in most any situation but try hard to keep my self in check.

Like Gas Man's reasons for buying a chopper. (just cant go slow) I have also questioned why I even ride my Sport Bikes on the street. Its because I cant stand not riding them for a month at a time waiting on a the next Track Day.

With all this said. I have never acted as stupid as GR and never will.

I wish I could do both but with the prices of the choppers it wasn't feasable for me!

words right outta my mouth! i just pray that people are mature enough to know when and where.
that's the important thing, having and using your common sense. it is ok to push the envelope a bit when you are on a deserted highway, etc. i know it is unrealistic to buy one of these bikes just to troll around town under 40 miles an hour. some of these kids today are buying bikes and testing the limits in all the wrong places. if no one will see them do this stuff, then they have no desire to do it. they pick the congested places to hot dog, thus putting everyone and themselves at increased risk. by all means, we should enjoy the capabilities of our machines, just under the proper circumstances. and i think all of us here (or most of us) are wise enough to know when the time is right.
