The ski areas have received over 300 inches of snow this winter, while Denver's had less than 10. So I've been doing a lot of riding. Going up my favorite road there is a switchback that has to be taken at 15 MPH. Then there is about 250 feet of steep, but straight road. Then another switchback in the other direction.

In first gear, I can accelerate wide open for about three or four seconds before I have to slow for the next switchback. My engine is very close to redline when I do this. My question is: should I up shift to second, start breaking, downshift into first, take the turn and accelerate. Or just leave it in first gear the whole way and use engine braking?

I've done it both ways. Leaving it in first makes a very satisfying engine sound as the engine whines down, but I sure like bleeping the throttle and downshifting too. What do you guys and girls do?

I always like to keep the rpm up high during cases like this, however I like to have enough power and speed when I come out. Other wise when you come out you are already at redline. I don't recommend downshifting to 1st during the switchback especially with the rpm's up that high in 1st. I guess it's just one of those that can go both ways.
