hey guys/gals, im new here and have read alot of info....one thing however that i am a lil puzzled by is motorcycle mileage....as in the lifespan of the vehicle....cars go 100k miles at least, with averages between 12-15k miles per year....now when looking at a motorcycle how do i know if its low mileage, cuz i have no idea how long they last and/or what the normal mileage per year is....please help me im so confused...

I've heard that when you go look at a used bike, bring a piece of tape to cover up the mileage. Use the checklist in another post to appraise the bike. If you still want the bike, check the mileage and use it as a bargaining factor if it's high, or just buy it if it's low.

thanks alot :dthumb: ....but what about the average (mileage) lifespan of a bike....once i buy i plan on keeping it long but want to know how long to expect tthe bike to last...i tried searching here and didnt find anything sorry if im :bthorse:

I don't know anyone who leases bikes, but the average age before trading up to a new or faster bike is three years. If you find a bike you like, maintain it, don't crash it or leave it out in the snow, it can last for many years. I have a 79 Suzuki and 90 Honda that look like new and operate better than new. But I'm not your average rider or shade-tree mechanic.

I think many riders "upgrade" to a new bike because of the motorcycle magazines, which are emulating computer magazines. The newest bike is 1/10 second quicker, five pounds lighter, and smaller than last year's model, so your operating system is obsolete unless you have the '05 model.

3K miles??? I sure hope everybody gets more than that!! But I would say that this question will vary depending on where you live. Obviously, Bull will be able to put on more milage due to "no-winter" weather... in Michigan, you can garauntee on 3-4 months of no riding, 2-3 months of SOME riding and 5-6 months of good riding weather!

Welcome stang. You have came to the right place for answers. This average of miles per year or season....well, it depends on the person. I have at times put 3K on my bike in one month and other times in 3 months.

Like No Worries said, take some tape and cover the milage. Go through a check list and if it works out from it, get it.

I believe that depends on... :skep: which part of the country you live and/or buying the bike from...I got mine in May of last year... and I put just over 8K on it by the end of the year and at this point I'm paced to add another 10 - 12K this year... so that might need some additional thought... :leaving:

:bash: What I think he's really concerned about is how many miles you can really get out of a bike before its a real POS and the motor just wants to give up.

I really can't answer that for you, I'm new to riding also, but I've heard you can get like 50k out of a sport bike on average before having to rebuild or replace the motor. I'm probably wrong on that, like I said. But I'm sure its probably where you ride and how harsh the conditions are, ex. really hot, dusty, huge hills...they would all play parts in how long a motors life would be. If you ride in those conditions or 130 mph everywhere you go, of course you put the motor under a lot of stress which would shorten the engines lifespan. I would like to know the answer to the average milage until rebuild/replacment too.

I know of some Honda's, and Suzuki's that have over 30k on the clock.
I personally average 10k per year on my bikes combined but, I ride ever chance I get. Even in the winter.
Mileage has little to do with life span!
It is almost guaranteed that a high mileage bike is well taken care off.
Don't be afraid of it, just use the earlier mentioned check list and go from there.

my sisters boy friend has the http://www.suzukicycles.com/products/DL650K5/Default.aspx and has 109000+ on it and it runs prefect!! he hasent done anything to it either exceopt tires and oil

Twisty's old TLS had like what.... 28K on it... and it was still strong motor... maybe running strong somewhere else :wink: And that bike was beat on, on a regular basis... :dthumb:

motorcycle engines are designed to take a beating

there was a magazine that proved how tough sportbike engines were. they ran a engine at redline for 2 hours with no oil and it ran fine. gotta find that article

Well, the R6 owners manual says to adjust the valves every 26,000 miles, so they obviously expect it to last. But mileage really doesn't matter; it's all in how well you maintain the vehicle.
