Do you ever lock your gear to your bike?

Let me explain... I keep a plastic covered SS lock cord in my bike and if I go to a function like a bike event or even the zoo and I don't want to carry my gear. I hang the helmets on the bike hooks and then run this cable thru the sleeve of my jacket and lock it to the bike, like the rear subframe or whatever. Leaving the jackets over the seat or whatever. It works really well and the only way for somebody to get them, is to cut the jacket, lock, or cable...

Maybe you've never even heard of it or thought of it. It works great...

That's a good idea... I've never thought of doing that! Sometimes I don't want to carry my stuff with me either, but do anyways just cuz I don't want it getting jacked. I'll have to try this

I just picked up a bike lock kit from the local store. The cable is all coiled up and about 3.5' to 4' long if it's stretched out. If you run sleeve into sleeve you can lock up like 6 jackets easily!

That is a good idea. As one of the rare few who seemingly go to bike rallies with gear on, having a way to secure my jacket is a beautiful thing.

There's a bike rally coming up next month, I'll definitely be giving that a try.

I lock my helmet to the helmet lock under the rear seat cowl...but only if I'm going to be away from my bike for awhile. Other than that I just wear the jacket and throw the helmet over the mirror.

I'm glad I was able to share this idea with people that didn't know about it. I'm tellin ya, it sure beats carring around all your gear on a hot day. If your bike don't have helmet hooks you can run the cable thru your face hole as well....

Definitely a good idea...

However, I've heard too many horror stories of people finding the chin strap cut on their helmet, or some other form of vandalism. Most of the time, if I'm going to be within eyesight of my bike, I will just leave my gear on the bike. If I can't do a visual check every so often, I lug the gear with me ! I may try the cable thing, but generally, if I'm somewhere I worry about my stuff, I take it with me. I would hate to be in a "Mandatory" helmet law state, and some schmo stole my helmet ! I don't know if the LEO's would be to understanding of me trying to get my bike home without the helmet, and quite frankly, I wouldn't think of riding my bike without it !

I use one, actually on our last trip to the beach we parked in a restaurant lot
and i ended up with 8 jackets all locked to my bike as i was the only one that had a cable lock
Like any lock, they only protect against a casual thief who may be tempted walking past a bike to just grab a helmet or jacket and keep on walking.
but in a busy lot, it would take a true scumbag to actually try to cut the lock
and its unlikely although not impossible. Still a great idea though and no one in
my group has ever had anything taken off their bike and only 1 bike has ever been stolen...... which was a VFR last week, DIRTBAGS ! :bash:

:withstupi For the most part I do it at open riders events, when no one knows who's bike it is or if THAT guy is the owner... I have also did it a bunch of times at places like the zoo with me and the wife.

Yes... for events like Bike Week, Biketoberfest, etc... this works great. When it's just too hot/crowded to wear or carry your gear around with you all day, and if the bike is parked in a "safe" (or at least very visible) area, it's worked quite well. Also, if you've got more than one bike (and more than one cable lock), it's also helpful to cable the bikes together (park the bikes tail to tail, and run the cable through the back wheels)... again, it won't deter a PRO thief, but it'll keep the casual crook at bay.
