CARBONDALE - As expected, the Southern Illinois University football team assumed the top spot in the Sports Network 1-AA football poll.
The Salukis, 2-0, who were ranked fourth last week, drubbed NAIA Union College 82-7 on Saturday. In the meantime, the three teams ranked above them, James Madison, Furman and Montana were defeated.
James Madison, the top-ranked team last week, lost 31-27 to Coastal Carolina and dropped to eighth. Furman, ranked second last week, is ranked 10th after losing 41-21 to Western Carolina. Montana, last week's third-ranked team, dropped just one spot after a 47-14 loss to Oregon.
"The thing about it is early in the year there is a lot of shuffling," said SIU coach Jerry Kill. "We certainly haven't played the competition Georgia Southern has played. I certainly don't think anybody knows who the best team in the country is after two weeks.
"At the same time, you don't apologize. Plus, it's good publicity. That's the biggest thing."
