Some of the guys here at work are telling me I can get more power out of my busa by remapping the fuel? What is this all about? I dont want to look too stupid asking since I work in a shop. :) :here: :here:

OK, it was worth a shot ! Re-mapping the fuel is just a term for having a custom program installed into your bikes engine management computer (ECM)(PCM)(PROM). What it does is recode the "points" along a given line, which tells the injectors when to open, & how long to stay open. Usually it also adjusts a few other things such as timing advance, timing retard, and can also reset such parameters such as top speed limiter, and RPM limits. My buddy who works at a local bike shop here by day as the primary mechanic also told me something very interesting when we were talking about installing the jet kit on my bike. He said that Suzuki ships thier bikes from the factory with the fuel delivery systems set very "Lean" (means less fuel, more air" so the bikes will pass US emissions laws. FYI

Hey, I'm just tryin' to help out a fellow rider, AND lose the "Squidly" designator... :whistle: Let's hope nobody starts the whole "What's better, Fuel Injection or Carbueration" topic... Maybe I should... :D Naw, it's been beat down too many times...

its been beat down alot in other forums, no doubt. But if you wanna start up a thread in Technical Help & Tuning ..you're more than welcome too. The wrench heads in here will come out of the wood work once they see it. :D

Many early fuel injection engines had some "hick-ups". See road tests of the early Honda RC51, Buell, etc. The August, 2001 issue of Motorcycle Consumer News cured the RC51's poor driveability with slip-on's and a Power Commander (remaps the engine control system). The pipes were $800, and the Dynojet $330. In some other issue, I remember they installed the same on a Buell and it added an incredible 20 HP.

If you have a driveability issue, stumbles, etc., the Dynojet may cure it. But the only problem I read with the busa is a fuel filter problem on the very early ones. :2cents:

No Worries, this is one of the reasons why nearly 3 years ago when I purchased my 9R I didn't want a bike with FI. Now I could see buying one w/o it...it has come along way!

FI vs carbs.....a question for the ages! But I'll start a new thread on it so we don't jack this one...

Mapping is FI's version of re-jetting your carbs. It allows you to add more fuel, air and add timing (the delay of when you get your spark). All of which adds MORE power to the mix. It will get rid of alot of the emmisions crapola low spots and make a nice even power band.

I would definately recommend doing this. You will not be dis-appointed. Now let me say a few things for Larry. Get a custom MAP, don't use a MAP that SHOULD work for you. Spend the extra time and $$$ and get the custom MAP. It will make your bike run GREAT!!! Plus with a custom MAP you can get it right on! That way you don't have to worry about your bike running too rich or too lean due to a non-custom MAP!

OK, a couple of points to clarify...

- How your bike is remapped depends on the product you choose. For example, Yoshimura has a box that changes the stored program in your bike's ECU (engine control unit). Once you make the change, you remove the tool. Factory Tuning also has a similar method. Other options such as the Power Commander and Yosh EMS are a piggy-back system where the bike's ECU maintains its original programming and you install and additional box in-line with the ECU to modify the signal sent to certain components. In most cases that is just the fuel injectors and sometimes ignition timing.

- These piggy-back modules typically modify the amount of time the fuel injector is held open each time it pulses (also known as injector duty cycle or IDC) as a percentage of what the factory ECU is calling for at a given RPM and throttle position. For example, at 10,000 rpm and 80%TP your bike might need 10% more fuel than what the stock ECU programming is calling for so you program this module to make that adjustment.

- The manufacturer's do tend to program their ECU's (or set idle circuits on carbs) on the lean side at idle to help meet emissions requirements. They also tend to set them a bit rich at WOT to help prevent the damage that comes with running too lean too long. Also, no two bikes are exactly identical due to production tolerances therefore they are set according to averages. This is why even a stock bike can benefit from rejetting or remapping.

Busa's and some other Suzuki's use a timing retarder. Ivan's [link]http://ivansperformanceproducts.com/tre.htm[/link] has a timing retard eliminator (TRE) that remaps the ignition. I would get the TRE before I messed with the fuel injection, and it's cheaper. :2cents:

putting a TRE on your bike wont give you better performance as far as fuel/air ratio. it does smooth out the low RPM stumble common with busas. a TRE makes your bikes computer think its in 5th gear all the time and the 5th gear map is advanced slightly giving you better throttle response in low rpm's and also the newer gen busas have the limiter that kicks in at a set rpm when in 6th gear so if the bike thinks its always in 5th it never kicks in the speed limiter and you have more top end :dthumb: Here is the best deal i have found on a TRE so far $30 vs like $75 on most sites--- http://jsdproducts.com/Products/JSD-1/jsd-1.html the JSD2 is also switchable so you can turn it on or off as desired. you should still get a powercommander and a custom map programmed ON A DYNO!!! and i like the powercommander cause if theres any doubts about a problem or map you can always unplug it and see if you still have a problem with stock computer vs paying to have the tuner hook up again to change things back to where they were.
