CHICAGO - Dan McCauley had seen one too many kids at his cafe lying on the floor in front of the counter, careening off the glass pastry case, coming perilously close to getting their fingers pinched in the front door. So he posted a sign: “Children of all ages have to behave and use their indoor voices.”

To him, it was a simple reminder to parents to keep an eye on their children and set some limits. But to some parents in his North Side Chicago neighborhood, the sign may as well have read, “If you have kids, you’re not welcome.”

I used to own and run a small (40 seat) FAMILY restaurant; I had a sign posted: "For The Comfort of All Patrons, Well Behaved Children Are Welcome". My clientel was everything from businessmen during the work week, to large families on Sunday morning, and in ten years at my own place, and another 20 in the industry, I've only had one problem.

A lady(?) came in one evening with her two young children, probably 4-6 yrs old; in ALL of my rather long life, I have NEVER witnessed such mayhem... the kids were running through the restaurant, throwing food, bothering other patrons, and swearing (yup, the 6 year old liked the word F**K, a lot).

When I approached the mother and asked her (politely) to get her children under control, she told me to mind my own business, her kids were "just being kids", and if I bothered her or them, she would sue me "for everything I would ever own". I said "No problem, Mam", walked into the waitress station, got a couple styro TO GO containers, walked back her table, picked up her plate, and dumped the contents into the togo container, the same with the kids food, put the containers in a bag, politely handed it to her, and said, "No one here will ever bother you again, not a waitress, busboy, or cook...I have instructed my staff to NEVER approach you or your children again, for any reason, nor may they talk with you or interact with you in any way... including taking an order, getting you a request, or clearing your table. Have a good day."

She turned beet red, grabbed her kids, and stomped out. The tables nearby applauded. Next Friday nite, she showed up with her kids AGAIN. When I told her I could not seat her and her kids, but I would be happy to provide her with carryout food, as long as her children remained in the car, she said "OK", we served her and she continued to be a good TOGO customer, but never sat down in my place for a meal again.

I grew up with the idea that, as a child, I was EXPECTED to behave in public...a couple of spankings got it through to me, and never damaged my tender psyche'. I don't think children are any different today, 'cept maybe the gene pool might be a little more , ah, how should I say... corrupted.

My Mom would have had no problems with a quick backhand across the table if I was pullin that crap in a restaurant!

My parents were much more sly...They would pop one of us with a rubber band...After one or two meetings with Mr. Band...all they had to do was show us they had one with them...Now if we were beyond the powers of Mr. Band...My Dad would ask us loudly if we wanted "All these people here" to see us crying after our spanking...and then you would get the knuckle knock on the head...It works on my children today...

-From what i understand, the guys sign caused quite a stink with the local parents. Issues of who has what right to expect what behavior from kids. the whole thing makes me laugh. im a parent and nomatter where we are, if my son is being rotten, we leave. 1) for the others. 2) for dicipline 3) for dicipline

i definately think that some people are taking the lazy approach to parenting nowadays. since in most families both parents are needed to work, by the end of the day they are both too tired to discipline the children. by allowing their children free reign in public places is in a way assuming others will attend to them if necessary, thus taking advantage of all those present. i applaud this man for taking back his rights and forcing parents to be held accountable for their childrens actions. the parents that are bothered by this sign are most likely the ones whose children are creating the infractions in the first place. i say, way to go mister! :dthumb:

You can blame today's society for this problem. Parents are afraid of losing the kids and or going to jail for any kind of physical discipline.
Let me tell you that a day in my room and or time in the corner only pizzed me off and I would retaliate when set free. Then I got my A$$ busted good for the deeds. That always seemed to work. I didn't want that again.

My parents had a black leather belt with blue stars stamped in it. Used only for spankings.
In public. They would simply ask, Do you want to see stars? Keep it up.
I knew exactly what that meant.

Too many times, too many places parents let their kids run wild and don't do a dayum thing about it.

I like to give the kids a real mean look when the parent aren't looking and that usually calms them down.

I applaud the guy. He's not saying that kids aren't welcome, he's just saying that unruly kids aren't welcome. When I was a kid, I knew to be well behaved. I still remember times when I was taken outside and spanked, and I feel it made me a better person and helped me to realize that I need to respect other people. I think this world has grown into one with a complete lack of respect for other people, and this comment from the article says it all. “The rights of any one individual — whether he or she be a parent, child or stranger — do not negate the rights of others.” We need to be respectful of other people, and in my opinion, letting your kids run wild and cause problems for other people is showing a lack of respect. Of course, the parents of THOSE kids would probably say that we should respect their right to be lazy and let their kids run wild.
